Nunez's Blast Helps Snappers Move Above .500
April 25, 2013 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Beloit Sky Carp News Release
BELOIT, WI - Renato Nunez homered and knocked in two runs for the Beloit Snappers as they topped the South Bend Silver Hawks 7-4 in Midwest League action in front of 175 at Pohlman Field on Thursday night.
The victory gives the Snappers a winning record for the first time this season at 9-8. South Bend is now 11-6.
Beloit seized the lead immediately, as a Bruce Maxwell double scored Christopher Bostick in the first inning. The next batter was Nunez (2-5, HR, 2 RBI, run), who cranked a two-run homer to right-center for an early 3-0 lead.
The very next inning, the Snappers used patience at the plate to put up three more runs off starter Jesse Darrah (1-1). They drew five bases on balls in the frame, including a bases loaded walk by John Wooten that forced in a run. Bostick drove in a run earlier in the inning with a sacrifice fly and an RBI single by Matt Olson (3-4. RBI, run) accounted for run number six.
Michael Ynoa started the game and tossed three innings without allowing a run before handing things over to Dakota Bacus (2-0). The Silver Hawks came up with two runs in the fifth off Bacus thanks to run-scoring singles by Fidel Pena and Socrates Brito (2-5, RBI). This was immediately answered in the bottom of the inning when Sam Roberts ripped a double off the wall in center to tally Olson for a 7-2 advantage.
South Bend did grab a run in the seventh on an error and in the eighth courtesy of Michael Lang's (2-4, RBI, run) RBI single, but that was all they would get. Ryan Dull was credited with his second save after he shutout the Silver Hawks in the ninth to end the night.
The second of three between these two teams is scheduled to be played Friday with first pitch at 6:30pm. Handling the pitch chore for the Snappers will be RHP Seth Streich (2-0, 3.77 ERA), while LHP Daniel Watts takes the hill for the Silver Hawks (2-0, 2.00 ERA).
