Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
Fort Wayne, Indiana -- The TinCaps beat the Peoria Chiefs, 9-4, at Parkview Field on Friday night for their second consecutive win at home. Fort Wayne pounded out a season-high 16 hits, while also benefitting from six Peoria errors.
Coby Cowgill made his TinCaps debut on the mound Friday and impressed from the get-go. The right-hander, who just joined the club this week from extended spring training, set aside Peoria (8-6) in order in the first inning and allowed only one base runner in the second.
With Parkview Field celebrating the "A Night at the Circus" theme, Friday's game presented plenty of oddities, especially in the bottom of the second inning. Fort Wayne had just one hit in the frame, but Peoria committed four errors. Adding insult to injury, Chiefs starter Silfredo Garcia (1-2) also threw two wild pitches and had another pitch fail to make it all the way to home plate. The TinCaps capitalized on the miscues to take a 3-0 lead.
Fort Wayne (6-8) increased its lead with a pair of runs in the third and two more in the fourth to go up 7-0. All nine TinCaps in the batting order had at least one hit in the game with seven producing two. Catcher Dane Phillips highlighted the offensive charge with a double and three runs batted in.
Cowgill left the game after 50 pitches with four shutout innings and three strikeouts. Yimmi Brasoban struggled in relief, allowing three runs in 1 2/3 innings, but was helped out by Genison Reyes (1-0), who tossed 1 1/3 innings of relief to earn the win. Erik Cabrera was touched for a run in the eighth, while closer Nick Mutz came on in a non-save situation in the ninth to end the game.
The TinCaps seek their first series sweep of the season at Parkview Field on Saturday evening at 5:05. Fort Wayne will start right-hander Justin Livengood against Peoria lefty Chase Brookshire. The game can be heard on The Fan 1380 and seen on XFINITY Channel 81._
