Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, Ohio-Tanner Rahier and Jeff Gelalich belted home runs while Nick Travieso fired six shutout innings as the Dayton Dragons defeated the Kane County Cougars 9-0 at Fifth Third Field on Friday night before a crowd of 9,390. The win was an excellent bounce-back victory for the Dragons, who saw their seven-game winning streak snapped on Thursday when they lost to Kane County 13-1.
Travieso (2-0) allowed five hits, all singles, over his six innings, walking one and striking out three to pick up the win. Relievers Layne Somsen and Evan Mitchell combined to work the final three innings as the Dragons posted their third shutout victory in their first 14 games. They improved their overall record to 10-4 and continue to occupy first place in the Midwest League Eastern Division.
The Dragons got the scoring started early when they scored two runs in the first inning. Sebastian Elizalde's run-scoring double keyed the inning. Then in the second, the Dragons added another run on Carlton Daal's RBI triple to center field to make it 3-0.
Rahier drilled a two-run home run to the left field seats in the fifth to make it 5-0, and Gelalich lined a homer to right field in the seventh to give the Dragons a 6-0 lead. Also in the seventh, Rahier delivered an RBI double, Sean Buckley added a run-scoring single, and Sammy Diaz doubled in one more run to make it 9-0 and close out the scoring.
The Dragons collected 12 hits. Gelalich, Rahier, Daal, and Phillip Ervin each had two. Elizalde had a hit and two walks. Gelalich made the defensive play of the home stand in right field with a diving, fully-horizontal catch of a liner off the bat of Shawon Dunston Jr. in the third inning.
The Dragons close out the series and the home stand on Saturday night against Kane County at Fifth Third Field at 7:00 p.m. (EDT). Daniel Wright (0-0, 0.00) will start for Dayton against Kane County's Duane Underwood (0-0, 3.00) as the Dragons try to win their fourth straight series. All Dragons games can be heard on WONE Radio (980 AM) and via the internet at wone.com and through the Dragons Mobile App.
