Dragons Shut out Cougars
April 18, 2014 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Kane County Cougars News Release
DAYTON, Ohio--- In the first two games of the series featuring the Midwest League's top two teams there has been plenty of offense, but only one team has shined at the plate each contest. After the Cougars (11-4) beat up Dayton's pitching on Thursday, the Dragons (10-4) shut out the Cougars 9-0 at Fifth Third Field Friday night.
The Dragons took their first lead of the series in the opening inning, but the Cougars' defense limited it to just two runs. Beau Amaral walked to lead off the Dragons offense, while Jeff Gelalich followed with a single. Phillip Ervin brought home the game's first run with a groundout and Sebastian Elizalde doubled home Gelalich for a 2-0 Dragons' lead. Shawon Dunston Jr. robbed the Dragons of another run as he made a leaping grab in left field to retire Tanner Rahier. Juan Paniagua then picked off Elizalde at second base.
Paniagua saw more trouble in the second inning when Carlton Daal tripled to bring home Joe Hudson for a 3-0 Dayton lead.
A two-out walk to Elizalde kept the fifth inning alive and Rahier made Paniagua pay. Rahier he sent the first pitch he saw over the left field wall for a two-run blast and a 5-0 Dragons advantage.
Dayton opened things up even more in the seventh plating four runs on Justin Amlung. Gelalich connected on a solo home run and two batters later Elizalde drew a walk. The next four Dragons reached base safely with two doubles and two singles to produce a 9-0 lead.
Nick Travieso (2-0) fooled Cougar batters all day long as he tossed six scoreless frames allowing only five hits and striking out three. Paniagua (0-1) was charged with five runs, all earned, on six hits through five innings. He walked four batters.
The Cougars and Dragons will wrap up this series at Fifth Third Field on Saturday. Duane Underwood (0-0, 3.00) will make his second start for the Cougars this year against Dayton's Daniel Wright (0-0, 0.00). First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. and can be heard on AM 1280 WBIG and kccougars.com.
