LAST NIGHT: The TinCaps opened the season with a 3-0 shutout win. Ryan Weathers struck out 9 and didn't walk anyone across 5 scoreless innings, while Jose Quezada, Angel Acevedo, and Carlos Belen closed it out. Fort Wayne broke the ice in the 6th when Agustin Ruiz laced an RBI single. Later in the frame, Xavier Edwards, who reached base 4 times on the night, had an RBI infield single. Blake Hunt added an RBI double in the 7th.
IN THE DUGOUT: Anthony Contreras is back for his 4th season as TinCaps manager, becoming the first skipper in the franchise's 27-year history to lead the team for more than 3 years... Hitting coach Jonathan Mathews (2nd season), fielding coach Jhonny Carvajal (3rd), athletic trainer Allyse Kramer (3rd), and strength coach Sam Hoffman (2nd) are also back. Matt Williams is the team's new pitching coach, succeeding Burt Hooton-the club's pitching coach for the last 6 seasons-who's missing the season as he recovers from knee surgery in March.
WELCOME BACK: 11 of the team's 25 players appeared in at least 1 game with the TinCaps last year: INF Luis Almanzar, LHP Joey Cantillo, LHP Dan Dallas, C Juan Fernandez, RHP Henry Henry, INF Justin Lopez, RHP Gabe Mosser, RHP Jose Quezada, OF Agustin Ruiz, LHP Ryan Weathers, and RHP Carlos Belen, who was a corner infield with the 'Caps in 2016 and '18.
PADRES ON DECK: MLB.com, Baseball America, ESPN, and more have rated San Diego's farm system as the best in baseball. The TinCaps have 4 players on MLB.com's Top 30 list for the Padres (see list to right). Not to be overlooked, ESPN's Keith Law ranks INF Justin Lopez at No. 19. He also notes RHP Efrain Contreras as another to watch, along with OF Agustin Ruiz and LHP Joey Cantillo.
VAMOS TINCAPS: A team of Padres minor league prospects ventured to Mexico City to play the Diablos Rojos del México and open up Estadio Alfredo Harp Helú, which is named after a member of the Padres' ownership team, with a pair of games March 23-24. Both games drew a sell-out crowd of 20,000+ fans and Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador threw out the ceremonial first pitch. LHP Ryan Weathers started Game 1, while RHP Efrain Contreras also pitched, joined by catcher Blake Hunt, infielders Xavier Edwards, Justin Lopez, Tucupita Marcano, and outfielders Grant Little and Agustin Ruiz. The Padres on Deck team impressively won both games.
LID-LIFTER HISTORY: Fort Wayne is 18-9 all-time on Opening Day, including a 3-0 win at Parkview Field on April 4th against the Lansing Lugnuts.
WHAT'S NEW IN 2018: Construction is underway on a new group hospitality area at Parkview Field in left-center field. The new area is expected to be ready in May. More details will be released in mid-April... Out beyond the center-field fence, construction of a Hampton Inn is nearing completion. The hotel is slated to open in July and will feature a rooftop bar... Parkview Field has a new "Snack Shack" near the Sweetwater Fun Zone area for kids. The "Snack Shack" will feature new food items like Apple Pie Bites and Funnel Cake Fries.
260 TO THE SHOW: 175 former Fort Wayne players have appeared in the major leagues, including 3 who've already debuted so far in 2019 with the Padres (shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. '17... right-handed pitcher Chris Paddack '16... left-handed pitcher Nick Margevicius '18). 50 Fort Wayne alums were in the bigs in the 2018 season, including All-Star pitchers Corey Kluber (Indians) and Miles Mikolas (Cardinals).
CAPS ON MiLB.TV: For the first time, this season TinCaps home games are available to watch on MiLB.TV (in addition to being broadcast around Indiana for Xfinity customers on Comcast Network 81). Fans can save $10 on their subscription by using the promo code TINCAPS.
WRECK 'EM: The TinCaps have a pair of Texas Tech alums on the squad in outfielder Grant Little and reliever Jose Quezada. Both are quite excited for the Red Raiders to be in the men's college basketball Final Four this weekend. Meanwhile, the TinCaps will be in Lansing on Saturday night when Texas Tech takes on Michigan State (located in East Lansing). First pitch Saturday is at 6:05, while tip is scheduled for 8:49.
ON THE FRANCHISE: The franchise was founded in 1993 as the Fort Wayne Wizards. The team was affiliated with the Minnesota Twins from 1993-98. The organization has been affiliated with the San Diego Padres since '99. The Wizards played at Memorial Stadium, about 3.5 miles north of Downtown Fort Wayne. The team moved into Parkview Field in 2009 and rebranded as the TinCaps, paying homage to John Chapman aka Johnny Appleseed, who's buried in Fort Wayne.
WHAT'S AT STAKE: Lansing looks to even the four-game series before it shifts to mid-Michigan on Saturday and Sunday, while Fort Wayne can guarantee at least a split of the series with a win.
