Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - A balanced offensive outburst and a strong night on the mound highlighted a 10-4 Cedar Rapids Kernels victory Friday against the Peoria Chiefs at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. DaShawn Keirsey Jr., Trey Cabbage, and Ben Rodriguez each drove in three runs, and Jordan Balazovic tallied nine of Cedar Rapids' 11 strikeouts.

The Kernels (1-1) earned an early 1-0 advantage in the first inning. Keirsey threw out Nolan Gorman at home plate to end the top half of the frame, and Rodriguez delivered an RBI single later in the inning that drove in Yunior Severino.

Gorman brief tied the contest for Peoria (1-1) during the third before Cedar Rapids regained the lead. Gorman's triple plated Delvin Perez for a 1-1 tie. The Kernels answered with a sacrifice popout by Keirsey and another RBI single from Rodriguez for a 3-1 edge.

Balazovic (1-0) protected Cedar Rapids' cushion by striking out six consecutive batters to finish his victorious start within his season debut. Balazovic limited the Chiefs to one run and four hits over five innings pitched while posting a game-high nine strikeouts.

A five-run rally in the bottom of the fifth extended the Kernels' lead to 8-1. Rodriguez's third RBI single opened the scoring. Jean Carlos Arias produced an RBI force out, and Cabbage followed with a run-scoring double. Near the end of the frame, Keirsey brought in two runs on a two-out single.

Peoria and Cedar Rapids each scored two runs during the sixth inning. The Chiefs trimmed their deficit to 8-3 after Nolan Gorman hit an RBI double and later scored on Leandro Cedeno's RBI groundout. Cabbage answered with a two-run home run for the Kernels to establish a 10-3 advantage.

The Chiefs tallied the final run on Lars Nootbaar's two-out solo shot in the top of the ninth, but the Kernels quickly closed out the contest and secured their 10-4 triumph.

Alvaro Seijas (0-1) allowed three runs over 2.1 innings pitched and took the loss for the Chiefs. Peoria's pitchers combined for nine walks including four to Severino alone. In contrast, Cedar Rapids' staff recorded 11 total strikeouts and did not walk a single batter.
