20-Game High School Baseball Program Opens Sunday at Fifth Third
April 5, 2019 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, Ohio - The 2019 High School Baseball Program, presented by Mount St. Joseph University, begins Sunday, April 7 with a doubleheader on tap at Fifth Third Field.
This spring, Mount St. Joseph University has made high school baseball possible at Fifth Third Field. This is the 14th straight season that high school games have been played at the home of the Dayton Dragons.
The opening high school game in 2019 is Lincolnview vs. New Knoxville, slated to start at 1:00 p.m. Lincolnview, from the Northwest Conference, has gotten off to a hot start this season winning two of their first three games. The Lancers are led by catcher Collin Overholt who was a second-team All-Ohio player a season ago. Lincolnview also returns junior right-handed pitcher Gavin Carter and senior righty Jaden Youtsey, who has committed to play at Tiffin University next year. New Knoxville, out of the Midwest Athletic Conference, has dropped its first two games of the season but hope to rebound from a rocky start against Lincolnview. This is a rematch of a scheduled game from last season that was rained out at Fifth Third Field.
The second game on Sunday is scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m. between Fairborn and Edgewood. Fairborn finished runner-up in the GWOC South Division a year ago by posting a 6-8 league record. Fairborn has dropped its first two games of the 2019 season. After winning its first game of the 2019 season, Edgewood has lost two straight, but none of the games have been conference matchups.
The doubleheaders continue at 4:00 p.m. on Monday, April 8th, beginning with Ponitz vs. Stivers in the first intra-conference battle at Fifth Third Field in 2019. Both schools are members of the Dayton City League. Stivers returns an experienced group from last season, including 8 starters and four seniors in the group. Geographically, the two high schools are separated by less than two miles of highway and both schools are less than two miles away from Fifth Third Field.
Following that game, Tippecanoe squares off against Piqua at 7:00 p.m. in a matchup of two GWOC programs. Tippecanoe had the best record in the entire conference a year ago by posting 25 overall wins and have already gotten off to a hot start this season winning its first conference game. Tippecanoe is led by a pair of senior pitchers, Kenten Egbert, a Miami University signee, and Ian Yunker, who has committed to play at Morehead State. While Piqua has dropped two of the first three games this season, the offense has been aplenty. Piqua is averaging nine runs per game, twice as many as the team averaged last season.
The first slate of games at Fifth Third Field wraps up on Tuesday, April 9, starting with a 4:30 p.m. contest between Lebanon and Harrison. After losing its opening game of the season, Lebanon then ripped off four consecutive wins to sit atop the GWOC West and have outscored opponents by roughly four runs per game. It's been a tough start to the season for Harrison who are winless over the first four games. However, Harrison did finish with the second most wins in the Southwest Ohio Conference a year ago and lost its conference opener this season by just one run.
Finally, at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Spencerville takes on Liberty-Benton. After finishing fourth in the Northwest Conference last season, Spencerville returns eight letter winners from a year ago including six seniors. Liberty-Benton finished third in the Blanchard Valley conference last season and return seven starters. Three of those are pitchers who had big years in 2018, all finishing with ERAs under 4.00.
The Dayton Dragons have been hosting the Miami Valley's best baseball teams since 2006 and are proud to continue the tradition for a 14th consecutive year. A complete list of high school baseball games scheduled to be played at Fifth Third Field can be found below.
All games are free to attend and the media is invited to cover them. Gates will open 30 minutes prior to the first game played that day. High schools may provide their own PA announcers, broadcasters, cheer squads, and national anthem singers.
The games at Fifth Third Field also serve as a fundraiser for the participating schools. This year's series of games will raise approximately $30,000 for the schools to help with the cost of uniforms, equipment, and bus transportation.
