West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
SOUTH BEND, IN - The West Michigan Whitecaps offense fell silent as part of a 1-0 loss to the South Bend Cubs in front of 2,572 fans at Four Winds Field on Friday night.
The Whitecaps finish their season-opening series at 0-2 as they return to West Michigan for their home opener against the Cubs Saturday afternoon.
South Bend scored their only run of the ballgame and 1-0 lead on a run-scoring groundout by Rafelin Lorenzo in the second inning. Scoring chances were few and far between from that point on. In the fifth, Ulrich Bojarski stranded runners at the corners and two outs with a fly out to deep right field, while West Michigan got a runner to third base with only one out in the eighth before Parker Meadows struck out and Jose King flew out to center field to end the threat. The Whitecaps had just four at-bats with runners in scoring position in the contest and were held hitless.
Cam Sanders (1-0) pitched five innings of scoreless baseball for South Bend to earn his first win, while Whitecaps starter Wilkel Hernandez (0-1) gave up a run in his four innings to take his first loss of the season. Relief pitcher Angel De Jesus tossed three shutout innings while allowing just two hits, and Maddux Conger worked around a pair of walks to deal a scoreless eighth. For the Cubs, reliever Jeff Passantino dominated in three scoreless frames, striking out six "Caps hitters, while closer Riley McCauley pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his first save of the 2019 season. The Whitecaps tallied just four hits in the ballgame, as catcher Chris Proctor led the way with a pair of hits in his season debut.
