LAST NIGHT: TinCaps LF Justin Farmer ripped a 2-run double to cap a big fourth inning, but South Bend scored the last 9 runs to win, 11-4, on a hot Saturday night at Parkview Field.

MILITARY APPRECIATION DAY: A sellout crowd is expected today, including more than 1,000 fans connected with the 122nd Fighter Wing, a unit of the Indiana Air National Guard in Fort Wayne. Thanks to sponsorship from OmniSource, Steel Dynamics, and the Padres ("Team of the Military"), complimentary tickets were available today for veterans, active duty military, and their families... The TinCaps are wearing camo jerseys that will later be auctioned to benefit Honor Flight Northeast Indiana... Today's game will also feature the 122nd Base Color Guard, God Bless America, and the National Anthem being performed by Sergeant Allie Jones, plus an F-16 Flyover... The father of TinCaps athletic trainer Lauren Gotschall, Air Force Colonel Gary Gottschall, has 24 years of service.

HISTORICAL SPOTLIGHT: While we've celebrated the legacy of Lou Gehrig and the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League this weekend, not to be overlooked, Friday was also the anniversary of the first ever game involving a professional team played at night under lights. At League Park (now Headwaters Park), the Jenney Electric Co. (which later became GE) put up 17 huge arc lights, plus lamps fastened to the grandstand and around the field. The game featured then-nearby Methodist College against a professional team from Quincy, IL, of the Northwestern League. (A Fort Wayne professional team had been scheduled to play Quincy, but when the game was rained out on May 30, Methodist replaced them.) A crowd of 2,000 paid 25 cents per ticket to witness history. Media covering the game was critical of the lighting... Hull, MA, hosted 2 amateur teams playing under lights in 1880... Source: Blake Sebring's "Fort Wayne Sports History" & SABR.

FORT WAYNE FAITHFUL: The TinCaps have averaged 4,362 fans per game so far this year across 28 openings, including a pair of sellouts. Fort Wayne's average attendance ranks 2nd in the Midwest League to Dayton, and 3rd overall out of 60 High-A clubs (Greenville, South Atlantic League, is 2nd). Parkview Field is also out-drawing more than half of Double-A ballparks and a few in Triple-A.

STARTING PITCHING: TinCaps starters have the 3rd lowest ERA in the Midwest League (3.27). South Bend starters have the lowest figure at 2.95.

CHICAGO VS. SAN DIEGO: The parent clubs for Fort Wayne and South Bend are playing this weekend at Petco Park. The Padres won 6-0 Saturday as 2017 TinCap Fernando Tatis Jr. hit a pair of home runs... Yu Darvish threw 7 shutout innings. As a member of the Cubs in 2018, he made a pair of rehab starts with South Bend.

HOT CAPS: The TinCaps have won 7 of their last 12 games... They've won back-to-back series and 3 of their last 4 sets... They went 15-11 in May.

BETTER THAN THEIR RECORD: Based off their -10 run differential for the year, the TinCaps project to have a 24-26 record (3 games better than their actual mark)... In games decided by 1 or 2 runs, the 'Caps are 6-15.

MANNY REMATCH: Manny Espinoza threw 3 innings here Tuesday, allowing 1 run on 4 hits and a walk. Jackson Merrill and Brandon Valenzuela singled, while Nathan Martorella and Kervín Pichardo doubled. Martorella also walked.

JAKOB MARSEE: Along with Peoria's Nathan Church, 1 of only 2 players in the Midwest League to appear in every game so far this season... had an 18-game on-base streak in May... In MWL, ranks 2nd in runs (38), 2nd in walks (37; 18% BB%), and 5th in stolen bases (15)... 8th best BB/K (0.88).

JACKSON MERRILL: MLB.com's No. 14 overall prospect (highest ranked in MWL)... had a 6-game hitting streak snapped Saturday... 9-for-22 (.409) in this series... Since May 5, 2nd in the MWL in average (.337)... For the season, 7th lowest K% (13%).
