Loons Win Streak Ends at 10, Finish 10-2 in 12-Game Road Trip

Beloit, Wis. - The Great Lakes Loons (35-15) historic winning streak snapped at 10 games as the Beloit Sky Carp (23-27) blanked the Loons 6-0 on a toasty 82-degree sunny Sunday at ABC Supply Stadium. It is the fourth time, Great Lakes has had a double-digit win streak in their franchise history.

The Loons day got off to a rough start. Yon Castro was a late scratch, the expected starter for Great Lakes. Luis Diaz, the Loons anticipated lead-off batter did not appear.

In the top of the first inning, Great Lakes' first baseman Dalton Rushing was hit by a pitch. After a couple of words vocalized in frustration, Rushing was ejected by home plate Guillermo Rodriguez. Frank Rodriguez took over, moving to the catcher spot, and Griffin Lockwood-Powell played first base.

The Loons utilized the most pitchers in a game this season with seven. Mitchell Tyranski started, allowing a home run to Beloit's first hitter Tanner Allen. A walk followed, but the left-hander retired the next three including two strikeouts.

Starting with the third batter up in the first, Great Lakes pitching put down 16 straight Sky Carp. Michael Hobbs tossed two scoreless, needing only 17 pitches to attain six outs. Jack Dreyer, delivered the next two frames, punching out three, including an eight-pitch battle with Beloit's cleanup batter Yiddi Cappe.

Through the first five innings, the Loons offense twisted just three hits but had a runner reach in each inning. In the top of the second and fourth, two runners reached. Taylor Young walked in both innings, Alex Freeland reached on a base on balls in the second, and Griffin Lockwood-Powell singled in the fourth. Both innings ended with strikeouts, from Sky Carp starter Zach King.

Two consecutive walks from Freeland and Lockwood-Powell dethroned King after 5.1 innings. Beloit's Caleb Wurster struck out two, leaving bases loaded after working around an additional walk. Great Lakes left 10 on base across the first six innings.

The Sky Carp scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth and three in the bottom of the seventh. Benony Robles walked lead-off batter Tanner Allen, and then Kahlil Watson whisked away a nine-game hitless streak, with a two-run homer to left field. Franklin De La Paz entered in the seventh and put three on, gaining only one out.

Carlos De Los Santos inherited the bases loaded and allowed a two-run single to Beloit's Cameron Barstad. A sacrifice fly later in the inning, netted the sixth Sky Carp run.

The Loons, over the final three innings, tacked on two hits but no runs. Griffin Lockwood-Powell singled in the eighth, a multi-hit game for him and Jake Vogel doubled in the ninth, the third double for Great Lakes. Yeiner Fernandez struck two doubles but was left in scoring position in both the third and fifth inning.

Atop the Midwest League East standings are the Great Lakes Loons possessing a seven-game lead over the West Michigan Whitecaps with 15 games to go in the first half. Tuesday, June 6th, begins a 12-game homestand starting with a six-game set against the Lake County Captains. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m., a Hometown Heroes night presented by HSC.
