TinCaps Escape With 5-4 Victory

COMSTOCK PARK, Mich. - The Fort Wayne TinCaps won by the slimmest of margins, 5-4 over the West Michigan Whitecaps, Monday at Fifth Third Ballpark. The TinCaps threw the potential tying run out at the plate for the final out of the game.
The TinCaps broke a 2-2 tie in the top of the 9th. Nate Freiman blooped a bases-loaded single into right to put Fort Wayne ahead, 3-2. Jason Hagerty's sacrifice fly made it 4-2, then Rymer Liriano's RBI double pushed it to a 5-2 margin.
In the bottom of the 9th, Fort Wayne RHP Rafael Arias hit the leadoff man with a pitch. After striking out the next two batters, Arias walked Elvin Soto then hit Billy Alvino to bring the winning run to the plate. Hernan Perez hit a liner to right which caromed off Dean Anna's glove.
Anna picked up the ball and fired to Jonathan Galvez, who spun and fired to the plate to nail Alvino and end the game.
The TinCaps took the lead in the early innings. Freiman's first-inning RBI single opened the scoring, then Jon Alia drove home Liriano to make it 2-0.
Fort Wayne RHP John Hussey excelled through four innings, holding the Whitecaps scoreless. In the 5th, West Michigan rallied with two outs. Perez and Jamie Johnson hit back-to-back two-out RBI singles to tie the game at 2-2.
Hussey allowed two runs on four hits, two walks and five strikeouts in five innings in a no-decision.
West Michigan RHP Jose Ortega gave up two runs in 1.2 innings to take the loss and drop to 0-1. TinCaps LHP Rob Musgrave (1-0) was the winning pitcher. Arias grabbed his first save despite allowing two unearned runs.
Fort Wayne upped its record to 3-2; West Michigan is now 1-4.
The TinCaps and Whitecaps (Class-A Detroit Tigers) finish the three-game series Tuesday at Fifth Third Ballpark at noon. LHP Nick Greenwood (1-0) gets the start against West Michigan RHP Trevor Feeney (0-0).
