Stuifbergen Solid in Season Debut
April 12, 2010 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Beloit Sky Carp News Release
The Beloit Snappers collected their first home win of the 2010 season as Tom Stuifbergen threw a gem in a 3-0 shut-out of the Peoria Chiefs Monday night at Pohlman Field.
The Snappers jumped on the board early as Aaron Hicks lead off the inning with a walk. Hicks would be picked off but was safe as Justin Bour couldn't handle the throw from first. Brian Dozier connected on a single to center putting runners on the corners. Derek McCallum would then fly out to deep left field and scored Hicks from third giving the Snappers the 1-0 lead. Dozier would then steal second and move to third on a strike out by Danny Rams. The Snappers would then score their second run of the frame when Chief's starter Nick Struck uncorked a wild pitch giving the Snappers a two-run lead.
Steven Liddle led off the fourth inning with a bizarre play as he cracked a liner down the third base side in which Chiefs left fielder Richard Jones had issues going into the left field corner. Liddle would come all the way around the bases for an inside the park home run to extend the Snappers lead 3-0.
After Stuifbergen left the game the Snappers bullpen struck out four Chief batters in four innings as Steve Blevins picked up his first save of the 2010 season. The Snappers offense who was shut out the previous game punched out 11 hits as four of the Snappers starters collected a pair of hits.
The "Brodie Trophy Player of the Game" is Tom Stuifbergen, who went six innings, struck out five batters and gave up no runs or walks in the contest.
Tuesday night Liam Hendriks will make his first start at Pohlman Field as the Snappers look to take the three game series from the Chiefs. Gates will open at 5:30pm with the first pitch schedule for 6:30pm.
