Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release

Bowling Green, KY - Making his first start in a Hot Rods uniform, left-hander Kyle Lobstein threw five shutout innings, allowing just two hits against the Dayton Dragons. His good outing, however, was spoiled when a six-run seventh led to a 7-4 Dayton victory on Monday night.

Lobstein started the game setting down the first eight hitters of the game up his first hit with two outs in the third. After that base hit, a double by Dayton's Shane Carlson, Lobstein retired the next five batters, carrying him into the fifth inning.

In his final frame, the 20-year-old Arizona native issued a one-out walk and a two-out single, but retired the side with a ground ball to second base. He allowed just two hits, walked one, and struck out three. He allowed just two runners to advance past first base, with both of those runners being stranded at second base.

Early on, it looked like Lobstein's efforts would be rewarded with a victory as the Hot Rods jumped out to an early 4-0 lead. They got a first inning run with one out when Tyler Bortnick singled, took second on a walk, and came home on a base hit from Ryan Wiegand to make the score 1-0.

An inning later, Bowling Green continued to attack Dayton starter Jacob Johnson (ND). Mark Thomas led off with a walk, took third two batters later when Robi Estrada singled to left field. Estrada wound up at second base after an error, giving Diogenes Luis a scoring chance with runners at second and third.

Luis wouldn't need to do much to get the runs home. Thomas scored on a wild pitch by Johnson; Estrada did the same a few pitches later to make it 3-0. Luis would up getting a hit, stole second, and scored on a two-out single by Tyler Bortnick for a 4-0 lead.

Dayton's rally began in the sixth with a solo home run by Henry Rodriguez off Jairo De La Rosa (0-1). An inning later, De La Rosa had more problems, hitting the lead-off man. Two batters later, with one out, Efrain Contreras singled to put runners at first and second. De La Rosa then hit Frank Pfister to load the bases. The next batter, Shane Carlson, reached on an error to score a run and make it a 4-2 game.

That was it for De La Rosa, who gave way to Matt Stabelfeld. The left-hander walked the first batter he faced, DiDi Gregorius, to force in another run on just four pitchers. A few pitches later, Rodriguez struck again with a grand slam into the Hot Rods bullpen to cap the scoring and give the Dragons a 6-4 lead.

The Hot Rods were then shut down the rest of the way by Chase Ware (three scoreless innings, W) and Doug Salinas (one inning, save) to preserve the win.

The Hot Rods now turn to right-hander Alexander Colome to avoid the sweep on Tuesday. The teams wrap up the series with a matinee affair, Modern Woodmen Education Day beginning at 11:05 AM. Colome (0-1, 18.00) will face RHP Josh Ravin (0-1, 4.91). For tickets, visit www.bghotrods.com or call 270.901.2121.

You can follow the game with Tom Gauthier and Hank Fuerst beginning at 10:50 AM CDT on 1340 AM WBGN and www.bghotrods.com.
