Tacoma Rainiers News Release
TACOMA, Wash. - The Tacoma Rainiers (4-1) weathered a late surge from the El Paso Chihuahuas (1-3) before ultimately coming away with a 6-3 victory on Monday night at Cheney Stadium.
The victory gave the Rainiers their best five-game record to open a season since the 2009 club started the year 4-1 - they would go on to finish the season at 74-70 and in first place in the Pacific Northern Division.
Leading 4-1 through five innings, the Rainiers surrendered single runs in both the sixth and seventh innings, reducing their lead to just one run.
However, a trio of one-out walks in the eighth inning would set up a bases-loaded, two-run single from infielder Efren Navarro that pushed Tacoma's lead out to the final margin of 6-3.
El Paso took an early 1-0 lead with a solo home run from designated hitter Alex Dickerson in the top of the second inning.
Tacoma took the lead in the bottom of the third inning with three runs coming off RBI singles from catcher Mike Zunino and infielder Shawn O'Malley, as well as a bases-loaded walk from designated hitter Mike Baxter.
Shortstop Chris Taylor (2x4), Navarro (2x5), and O'Malley (2x3) all recorded multiple hits in the contest, while combining for two runs scored and four RBI.
Rainiers starting pitcher Donn Roach, making his season debut, allowed two runs one six over 5.2 innings of work with no walks or strikeouts.
Relievers David Rollins, Jonathan Aro, and Blake Parker combined to hold El Paso to just one run on three hits over the final 3.1 innings of the game. Parker earned his second save of the season after working a perfect ninth inning.
Tacoma and El Paso square off again tomorrow, Tuesday, April 12 at 6:05 p.m. PT. The Rainiers are scheduled to start right-hander Joe Wieland (0-0, 4.50), while the Chihuahuas are slated to go with righty Carlos Pimentel (0-0, -.--).
