EL PASO - Chihuahuas ambassador and El Paso's favorite dog, Chico, will celebrate a mascot milestone as he makes his 1,000th community appearance in less than two years, today, April 12th, two days shy of his second birthday and three days away from the Chihuahuas home opener!

Debuted on April 14, 2014, the silent Chico made his first appearance on radio via the Chihuahuas flagship station Team 600 ESPN El Paso. Since his unveiling Chico has not only fostered a sense of pride for the Chihuahuas, but for the city of El Paso.

" _," said Chico. " _!"

Standing at 7-feet tall, Chico's duties far surpass that of gameday entertainment, photos with fans and high-fives. Chico's appearances not only include birthday parties, company outings, and parades but also area school visits. These school appearances show his affinity for teaching children and in turn have garnered the largest community impact.

At the start of the 2015-16 school year, Chico launched several education-based programs benefiting the El Paso and Las Cruces school districts including but not limited to the Chico Attendance Program, STAAR and PARCC Rallies, and Anti-Bullying Campaigns.

The largest of the programs is Chico's Turn Up the Volume on Reading, a learning presentation that allows students to create their own story by developing characters, plot twists, heroes and villains. Chico and his friends bring a level of entertainment with an assortment of props helping to make learning fun!

"Chico is our ambassador and he reflects our commitment to the community," said Chihuahuas General Manager Brad Taylor. "The community has embraced Chico and the Chihuahuas."

Currently, Chico has been around town assisting the Chihuahuas with Gatorade Go Play, an initiative that celebrates and promotes kids living an active lifestyle. It is at today's Gatorade Go Play event, with the Blue Star Bombers little league football team, in which Chico will make his 1,000th appearance in front of 125 players at 6:30 p.m. at Specialist Rafael Hernando III Middle School.
