Portland Timbers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - Kicking off the 2018 season presented by Sightbox, the Portland Timbers will travel to face the LA Galaxy at the StubHub Center on Sunday, March 4. Beginning at 7 p.m. (Pacific), Sunday's match against the Galaxy will be televised nationally on FS1 with local radio broadcasts on 750 AM/102.9 FM The Game (English) and La GranD 1150 AM/93.5 FM (Spanish).
Timbers' record in MLS season openers
Since joining MLS in 2011, the Timbers have produced a 3-1-3 record in season-opening matches, winning their last two games to start the season. Most recently, in the 2017 regular-season opener, the Timbers produced a 5-1 victory over Minnesota United at Providence Park, with three different players scoring in the victory.
Facing the LA Galaxy
The Timbers are unbeaten in their last two matches (2-0-0) played against the LA Galaxy, picking up consecutive wins against the California-based club in the 2017 MLS campaign. In their first road match of the 2017 season, the Timbers defeated the Galaxy 1-0 at the StubHub Center on March 12, with midfielder Diego Chara scoring the game-winning goal. In their only additional matchup in 2017, the Timbers picked up a 3-1 win against the Galaxy at Providence Park on Aug. 6, with forward Fanendo Adi, midfielder Diego Valeri and defender Alvas Powell each scoring in the victory. Additionally, the Timbers are unbeaten in their last three games (2-0-1) played at the StubHub Center, dating back to Oct. 18, 2015, outscoring the Galaxy 7-3 during that stretch.
Extended road trip
Sunday's match against the Galaxy marks the first of five games on the road for the Timbers, as the club opens its eighth season in MLS. The Timbers' five-game road trip to start the 2018 season is due to the construction currently underway at Providence Park as part of phase one of the stadium expansion. During that stretch, the Timbers will travel roughly 20,000 miles, facing the LA Galaxy, New York Red Bulls, FC Dallas, Chicago Fire and Orlando City SC. Portland enters Sunday's match after showcasing one of the strongest away records in the league in 2017, with the Timbers ranked tied for the fourth-most away victories (4) in the league last season.
Timbers' form heading into the regular season
Entering the season-opening match against the Galaxy, the Timbers are coming off back-to-back preseason wins, scoring a combined seven goals in their last two games played. After defeating the New York Red Bulls 4-1 on Feb. 21, the Timbers scored three second-half goals to erase a two-goal deficit, defeating Sporting Kansas City 3-2 in their final preseason match in 2018.
Next match
Following Sunday's match against the Galaxy, the Timbers will travel to face the New York Red Bulls at Red Bull Arena on Saturday, March 10. Beginning at 4 p.m. PT, the match will be broadcast live on ROOT SPORTS with local radio broadcasts on 750 AM/102.9 FM The Game (English) and La GranD 1150 AM/93.5 FM (Spanish).
