Portland Timbers News Release
Timbers kick off 2015 season Saturday against Real Salt Lake at Providence Park
PORTLAND, Ore. - Kicking off the 2015 season presented by Simple and celebrating 40 years as a club since the team's founding in 1975, the Portland Timbers play host to Western Conference foe Real Salt Lake at Providence Park on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. (Pacific). The match, presented by Providence Health & Services, will be broadcast live on ROOT SPORTS with local radio broadcasts on 750/102.9 The Game (KXTG) and in Spanish on La GranD 1150 AM (KGDD).
Saturday's match marks just the second season-opening game against a Western Conference opponent since 2011, when Portland traveled to face the Colorado Rapids in their first-ever MLS match on March 19, 2011. The Timbers are 2-0-2 in home season-opening games at Providence Park, including a 4-2 win over the Chicago Fire in the team's inaugural MLS home game on April 14, 2011. Portland has sold-out all 68 of its home games at Providence Park since 2011.
Portland enters the match following a strong performance in preseason, compiling a 2-1-3 overall record in six matches while conceding just three goals (including an own goal). The Timbers earned clean sheets against Sporting Kansas City, the San Jose Earthquakes and Norwegian side Stabæk during preseason play. Spanning the end of last season, Portland comes into Saturday's game with a 304-minute streak without conceding a goal in regular-season play. The Timbers finished the 2014 season strong with three consecutive shutouts and will match the MLS-club record of 342 minutes without conceding a goal if they can keep Real Salt Lake off the board in the opening 38 minutes of Saturday's match.
Saturday's match marks the 12th all-time regular-season meeting between the Timbers and Real Salt Lake since 2011 and the first time the two Western Conference sides open the regular season against each other. Portland most recently played Real Salt Lake to a scoreless draw on Oct. 17 at Providence Park. Earlier in the 2014 season, the Timbers earned their first regular-season victory at Rio Tinto Stadium with a 3-1 win on June 7 as Fanendo Adi registered a brace in the first half and midfielder Will Johnson tallied a penalty kick in the 73rd minute to cap the comeback after the Timbers conceded the game's opening goal in the 23rd minute.
Portland has compiled a 2-5-4 all-time record against Real Salt Lake since 2011, including a mark of 1-1-3 at Providence Park. The Timbers are unbeaten in three consecutive regular-season home games against Real Salt Lake (0-0-3), dating back to Aug. 21, 2013.
Following Saturday's match, the Timbers play host to the 2014 MLS Cup-champion LA Galaxy on Sunday, March 15, at Providence Park. Sunday's match will be broadcast live nationally on FOX Sports 1 with local radio broadcasts on 750/102.9 The Game (English) and La GranD 1150 AM (Spanish); kickoff is set for 4 p.m. (Pacific).
