PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland Timbers will compete in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Round of 16 for the fifth time in the last six seasons when the team plays host to the LA Galaxy at Providence Park on Friday night. Beginning at 8 p.m. (Pacific), Friday's match will be streamed live on www.timbers.com

Timbers in Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup play

Friday's match marks the Timbers 29th (15-13) fixture in the U.S. Open Cup since 2004 and their second of the 2018 season. Portland advanced to the Round of 16 after securing a 2-0 win over the San Jose Earthquakes in the fourth round on June 6, with forward Jeremy Ebobisse and midfielder Dairon Asprilla each scoring in the win. Portland's most successful run in U.S. Open Cup play took place during the 2013 campaign, with the Timbers advancing to the semifinals before falling 2-1 to Real Salt Lake at Rio Tinto Stadium on Aug. 7, 2013.

Facing the Galaxy

Portland's U.S. Open Cup match on Friday marks the second time the two teams have met in the competition (dating back to 2004) in the club's MLS era. Both teams previously met in the Round of 16 on June 29, 2016, with the Galaxy managing to take a 1-0 win at Providence Park. Additionally, Friday's game signifies the third meeting between the two teams across all competitions in 2018. In the most recent meeting between Portland and the Galaxy, both teams battled to a 1-1 draw at Providence Park on June 2, with midfielder Diego Valeri converting from the penalty spot in the second half.

Scouting the Galaxy

Heading into Friday's match, LA is unbeaten in its last three matches across all competitions, most recently coming off a 3-0 win over Real Salt Lake at the StubHub Center on June 9. The Galaxy advanced to the Round of 16 after taking a 3-1 win over Premier Development League (PDL) side FC Golden State Force on June 6. Forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic leads the team in goals scored (7), while midfielder Emmanuel Boateng has the most assists on the team (5).

Next match

Following Friday's game, the Timbers will return to league play on the road, facing Atlanta United FC on Sunday, June 24, at Mercedes Benz Stadium. Beginning at 1:30 p.m. (Pacific), the June 24 match will be televised nationally on FOX with local radio broadcasts on 750 AM/102.9 FM The Game (English) and La GranD 1150 AM/93.5 FM (Spanish).
