Portland Timbers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland Timbers today selected four players in the 2012 MLS Supplemental Draft. The Timbers selected goalkeeper Doug Herrick, midfielder Miguel Ibarra, defender Ryan Kawulok and midfielder Logan McDaniel in the four-round draft.
The Timbers held the eighth pick in each of the four rounds. With the No. 8 overall pick, the Timbers selected Kawulok from the University of Portland and a product of the Portland Timbers U-23s.
Kawulok, 22, started all 20 games and registered two goals and two assists for the University of Portland as a senior in 2011. A native of Fort Collins, Colo., Kawulok was a four-year starter for the Pilots, compiling All-West Coast Conference honors all four seasons, including first-team selections in 2010 and 2011. Following his senior season, he was named the WCC Defender of the Year, becoming just the second Pilot to land the league's defensive player of the year award.
Kawulok was a stalwart on the backline for the Timbers U-23s for two seasons from 2010-11. He appeared in 34 matches and scored five goals for the Timbers' development team, which competes in the Premier Development League (PDL). Kawulok earned consecutive PDL All-Western Conference honors and led the Timbers U-23s to their first PDL championship in 2010.
Ibarra was selected by the Timbers in the second round (No. 27 overall). At the University of California, Irvine, Ibarra, 21, recorded nine goals and eight assists over 23 games in his senior season in 2011. The Lancaster, Calif., native led the Anteaters to their third berth in the NCAA tournament, as well as the Big West Conference regular-season and tournament titles. Among his many accolades in 2011, Ibarra was tabbed an NSCAA first-team All-American and shared Big West Offensive Player of the Year honors. He was an NSCAA second-team All-American at Taft College in 2009 before transferring to UC Irvine.
In the third round (No. 46 overall), the Timbers selected Herrick, 22, from St. Mary's College. As a senior in 2011, Herrick recorded a single-season school record 10 shutouts in 23 games to lead the Gaels to the WCC championship and the Elite Eight of the NCAA tournament. He garnered his third all-conference selection as well as NSCAA All-Far West second-team honors and was named to the NSCAA Men's Collegiate Scholar All-America Team following the 2011 campaign. From Seattle, Wash., Herrick finished his collegiate career as the school's record holder for career wins (28) and shutouts (24).
McDaniel, 21, was the Timbers' fourth-round selection (No. 65 overall). He finished his senior season at Loyola Marymount University tied for the team lead with five assists and received All-West Coast Conference accolades in 2011. McDaniel played in 75 matches (61 starts) during his career at LMU and accumulated six goals and 18 assists. The Palmdale, Calif., native was a three-time all-conference selection for the Lions, earning second-team honors in 2009, and ranked among the team's assist leaders in each of his last two collegiate seasons.
