
Timbers Fall 3-0 to Sporting Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, Kan. - Playing a second consecutive away match in a four-day stretch, the Portland Timbers fell 3-0 to Sporting Kansas City before 19,737 fans at Children's Mercy Park on Saturday evening. Next up, the Timbers will return to Providence Park to play host to Cascadia-rival Seattle Sounders FC on Sunday, Aug. 26.
Key plays
Portland (10-6-7, 37pts) created a strong chance against the run of play in the 12th minute when forward Samuel Armenteros hit a one-time effort from the edge of the box, rattling his strike off the post.
Midway through the first half, Sporting Kansas City (12-6-6, 42pts) opened the scoring when forward Diego Rubio fired a low, driven shot from the edge of the box, pulling his strike just inside the near post in the 28th minute of play.
Sporting KC doubled its lead with eight minutes left in the first half when forward Daniel Salloi broke free down the left wing and played the ball to Rubio, who converted from close range.
Portland created a strong chance early in the second half when midfielder David Guzmán received the ball just outside the 18-yard box, before blasting a difficult left-footed effort that forced an awkward save from goalkeeper Tim Melia in the 47th minute.
Continuing to attack, the Timbers created another chance when midfielder Andrés Flores got on the end of a cross inside the box, nodding a low header just past the far post in the 66th minute.
Sporting KC scored the game's final goal in the 89th minute when midfielder Johnny Russell slotted his effort into the far corner from inside the box.
Notes:
Defender Marco Farfan made his first start since June 9, which was also against Sporting KC.
Defender Larrys Mabiala saw his consecutive minutes played streak come to an end at 2,655 minutes, dating back to last season.
Goalkeeper Steve Clark was named to the 18-man roster for the first time after being acquired by the Timbers on Thursday.

Next up, the Timbers will return to Providence Park to play host to Seattle Sounders FC on Sunday, Aug. 26. Beginning at 6:30 p.m. (Pacific), the Aug. 26 match will be televised nationally on FS1 with local radio broadcasts on 750 AM/102.9 FM The Game (English) and La GranD 1150 AM/93.5 FM (Spanish).
