
Timbers Drop 3-1 Result to Viking FK in Second Preseason Tournament Match

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland Timbers dropped a 3-1 result against Viking FK in their second match of the Timbers preseason tournament presented by Old Trapper Beek Jerky at Providence Park on Wednesday night. Justin Rasmussen scored his first goal in preseason action with the Timbers, while Josecarlos Van Rankin added his first assist of the preseason.
Preseason in Portland
Tonight's match marked the second match of the 2022 preseason tournament for Portland. In the opening match of the tournament on Feb. 13, the Timbers defeated Minnesota United FC, 1-0. In the tournament finale, Portland will take on Real Salt Lake on Saturday, Feb. 19, at 5 p.m. (Pacific). Notably, the two teams squared off last in the Western Conference Final at Providence Park on Dec. 4, 2021, with the Timbers earning a 2-0 win.
Notes
Rasmussen, a 2022 MLS Draft pick, netted his first goal with the Timbers in tonight's preseason match. Rasmussen was the Timbers' first pick in this year's draft and 27th overall. Van Rankin tallied his first assist in 2022 preseason competition for the Timbers. Through its first two matches of the tournament, a total of 26 players have featured for Portland.
Goal-Scoring Plays
VFK - Niklas Sandberg (Veton Berisha), 11th minute: Veton Berisha dribbled the ball into the right side of the 18-yard box and cut the ball back to the middle of the box. Niklas Sandberg received the pass and fired a right-footed shot into the back of the net.
VFK - Kristoffer Lokberg (penalty kick), 37th minute: Berisha took a penalty kick that was blocked by Timbers goalkeeper David Bingham. Kristoffer Lokberg found the ball to score through a rebound.
POR - Justin Rasmussen (Josecarlos Van Rankin), 45+1: Josecarlos Van Rankin served the ball from the right wing into the center of the box. Justin Rasmussen controlled the ball with his chest and connected with a volley, sending a swerving strike into the right side of net.
VFK - David Brekalo (Sondre Auklend), 71st minute: David Brekalo headed the ball past Bingham and into the net off a corner kick.
Next Game
The Timbers conclude their preseason tournament at Providence Park on Saturday, Feb. 19, against Real Salt Lake; kickoff is set for 5 p.m. (Pacific).
