Medicine Hat Tigers News Release
Medicine Hat, AB - The Red Deer Rebels are hosting the Memorial Cup this season and have since re-tooled their roster from the last time the Tigers saw them, in 2015. The Tigers were looking to break a 6 game slide Wednesday night and take the final game of the season series.
In the opening period the Tigers got stellar goaltending from starter Mack Shields as he stopped all 17 shots sent his way. Medicine Hat got 9 shots on Rylan Toth but neither team could solve the men in the pads. Matt Bradley came the closest to lighting the scoreboard, but his shot found the crossbar behind Toth and stayed out as the two clubs were scoreless heading into the intermission.
One face the Tigers haven't faced as a member of the Rebels this season is Adam Helewka, as the 20 year old San Jose Sharks prospect was dealt at the deadline from Spokane. Helewka would open the scoring in the period just 3 minutes in for his 30th of the year, finally solving Shields. Just past the midway point Helewka would strike once more for his 31st of the year, tapping home a rebound off a deflected point shot to extend the lead to 2-0. Then just as the period would expire Helewka capped off the natural hat trick on the power play as the Rebels took a 3-0 lead into the break. Medicine Hat had their chances and battled hard, despite injuries and illness hitting the team but couldn't solve Toth.
The final frame was an even one as the Tigers tried to claw their way back into the game. The Rebels added to their lead just before the midway point on an Adam Musil goal. However the Tigers would break the shutout of Toth with only 20 seconds remaining in the game when a red hot Steven Owre potted his 14th of the year on the power play as David Quenneville and Chad Butcher picked up the assists on the play. However, the Tigers would fall on this night, despite a 46 save performance by Shields.
THREE STARS OF THE GAME:
1. ADAM HELEWKA - RD - (3G)
2. ADAM MUSIL - RD - (1G, 2A)
3. KAYLE DOETZEL - RD - (1A)
Medicine Hat is now off until Saturday when they visit the Swift Current Broncos, starting a span of 4 games in 9 days.
