Portland Winterhawks News Release
Rodrigo Abols scored the game-winning goal in overtime as the Portland Winterhawks (27-25-2-0) picked up a 3-2 win in Spokane Wednesday over the Chiefs (26-21-4-2).
Abols went hard to the net in the extra frame and battled for a loose puck, fending off a Spokane defender and knocking it in to give the Hawks the win.
Portland had struck first 5:53 into the game when Dominic Turgeon scored a power play goal to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead they took into the second.
It remained a one-goal game until the 16:16 mark of the second, when Colton Veloso collected a loose puck in the Spokane crease and banged it past netminder Lasse Petersen for a 2-0 lead the Hawks took into the third.
The Chiefs got on the board midway through the third at 9:26 when Jacob Cardiff scored to cut Portland's lead to 2-1. Spokane then tied it with 59.2 seconds to go in the third on a goal by Dominic Zwerger to even the game at 2-2 and force overtime, where Abols ended up winning it for Portland.
In addition to Abols's heroics, defenseman Caleb Jones was in on all three goals with a trio of assists.
Both netminders were terrific in Wednesday's contest. Adin Hill made 39 saves in the win, while Petersen turned away 33 of the 36 shots the Hawks took.
Portland was 1-3 on the power play and 1-1 on the penalty kill.
The Hawks will be back in action Friday when they host the Everett Silvertips at 7 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
