Spokane Chiefs News Release
SPOKANE, Wash. - The Spokane Chiefs battled back from a two-goal third period deficit to force overtime but lost in the extra frame, 3-2 on Wednesday night. Jacob Cardiff and Dominic Zwerger each scored a goal and added an assist while goaltender Lasse Petersen made 33 saves for the Chiefs.
Portland opened the scoring at the 5:53 mark of the first period, taking advantage of a Chiefs' penalty to make it 1-0. Captain Dominic Turgeon found himself all alone on the right post, where he backhanded the puck over Petersen's glove for his 27th goal of the season.
The Winterhawks extended their lead to 2-0 late in the second period after a Spokane turnover led to an odd-man rush. After stopping the initial shot, Petersen couldn't keep the rebound chance out of the net as Colton Veloso punched it in.
Cardiff potted his sixth goal of the season at the 9:27 mark of the third period to cut the Winterhawks' lead in half, taking a perfect cross-ice pass from Keanu Yamamoto to chip it into the open net. Assists on the play extended point streaks for Yamamoto (now five games) and Hudson Elynuik (now seven).
With a pulled goalie and only 59 seconds remaining in regulation, Zwerger found a loose puck in front to tally his team-leading 22nd goal of the year off assists from Cardiff and Elynuik.
Zwerger's goal forced overtime, where the Winterhawks' Rodrigo Abols took advantage of another second-chance opportunity to push in the game-winner with just 15 seconds left in the five minutes of added time.
Portland's Adin Hill finished the game with 39 saves on his way to first star honors. Spokane was 0-for-1 on the power play and 2-for-3 on the penalty kill. The game was the fourth of seven head-to-head contests this season to go to overtime.
With both teams earning points in the standings, Spokane now sits in third place in the division; three points behind Seattle and two ahead of Portland. The Winterhawks remain in the first wild card position, tied with Kamloops and three points ahead of Tri-City.
The Chiefs' next game is one the road on Friday against the Kootenay Ice. Mike Boyle will have the radio call on 1510 KGA NW Sports Talk with the pre-game show starting at 5:30 p.m. PST; the puck drops at 6 p.m. PST.
Spokane next returns home on Saturday to take on Kootenay on General Store BUCK Night & Jersey Towel Giveaway (first 5,000 fans).
