West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
COMSTOCK PARK, MI - When the doors open next Tuesday, June 17, for the 50th Midwest League All-Star Classic presented by Amway, there will be one very notable past All-Star at the game. Former Detroit Tigers star Willie Horton will be in attendance.
Horton, a member of the World Champion 1968 Detroit Tigers, had a stellar 18-year Major League career earning All-Star accolades four times - in 1965, 1968, 1970 and 1973 - all with the Tigers. The Detroit native finished in the top 10 in MVP voting twice, finishing eighth in 1965 and fourth in 1968.
In all, Horton played 15 years for the Tigers and eventually had his number 23 retired by the organization in 2000. He became just the sixth player in Tiger history awarded this honor.
Horton will be signing autographs from 5:45 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. on the concourse at Fifth Third Ballpark.
Gates for the All-Star Classic open at 4 p.m. and game time is set for 7 p.m. Several pre-game activities, including an on-field autograph session and the "Pepsi Lost Art of Bunting" contest, will fill the afternoon.
The All-Star Classic is expected to sell out. It is traditionally not only a display of the league's talented baseball prospects but also a showcase of the host city to the hundreds of league executives, baseball fans and players who will be in attendance for the event. The game is an opportunity for the Whitecaps to show off the newly rebuilt Fifth Third Ballpark as well as West Michigan.
The 2014 All-Star Classic will be the third that the Whitecaps have hosted in the team's 20-year history. The Whitecaps first hosted it in 1995 and then again in 2003.
Tickets can be purchased by calling the Whitecaps front office at 616-784-4131, by visiting www.whitecapsbaseball.com, or in person at the Fifth Third Ballpark ticket window located inside the CapSized Shop, open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.
