Kane County Cougars News Release
BELOIT, Wis.- For some reason the Cougars haven't cracked a win at Pohlman Field yet this season, but Friday there was a reason and it was Dylan Covey. Beloit's right-hander tossed a complete-game seven hitter allowing just two runs as the Snappers (28-40) defeated the Cougars (45-23) by a score of 3-2.
Pitching dominated the entire game as Paul Blackburn gave the Cougars five strong innings, followed by three solid innings of relief from Josh Davis.
The Cougars jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Carlos Penalver doubled to begin the ballgame. Daniel Lockhart grounded out which moved Penalver to third. Ben Carhart followed up with a groundout that scored the Cougar shortstop for a one-run advantage.
That lead held until the fifth inning. After Blackburn faced just one over the minimum through the first four frames, the Snappers finally got to him in the fifth. Luis Baez connected on a one-out double and BJ Boyd drove Baez in with a triple. Phil Pohl gave the Snappers' their first lead with an RBI base hit to put Beloit on top 2-1.
It wasn't until the seventh that the Cougars saw the scoreboard again when Yasiel Balaguert sent the first pitch he saw over the left field wall for his fourth home run of the season. Balaguert's blast tied the game at two.
Davis did not allow a run in his first two innings, but had trouble finishing off the Snappers in the eighth. With two outs, Boog Powell kept the inning alive with a single. After stealing second base, Melvin Mercedes connected on a base hit to drive home Powell and put the Snappers ahead late in the ball game 3-2.
Covey finished off the Cougars with a perfect ninth inning, sealing the win for a 4-5 record. Davis (1-2) suffered the loss.
The series will continue from Beloit on Saturday with a 7:00 p.m. first pitch from Pohlman Field Jen-Ho Tseng (3-0, 2.83) will make the start for the Cougars against the Snappers' Matt Stalcup (0-2, 4.26). The game can be heard on AM 1280 WBIG and kccougars.com.
