Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
Fort Wayne, IN - Annie once sang that tomorrow was "only a day away", and on Spotlight on Broadway Musicals Night at Parkview Field, the winning run was only a hit away in a 4-3 Bowling Green over Fort Wayne win in 10 innings. The Hot Rods' Johnny Field singled home Spencer Edwards in the top of the 10th inning to give the visitors a victory in Friday's series opener.
If the game were to be divided into two acts, the first would consist of innings one through six. The game's opening number was a short but sweet tune played in the first inning by Fort Wayne (29-38) second baseman Fernando Perez, who drove home Mallex Smith to make it 1-0, TinCaps.
Kyle Lloyd masterfully directed the Bowling Green (31-36) hitters, mostly back to the dugout, over his six-plus innings of work. The right-hander fanned seven batters, allowed seven hits, and walked two.
However, the three runs he did allow all came in act two - which started in the seventh inning. Hot Rods third baseman Pat Blair, who came to the plate after back-to-back singles by Oscar Hernandez and Juniel Querecuto, delivered a three-run home run over the wall in left to put the Tampa Bay affiliate in front, 3-1. Lloyd's night ended after that swing.
The TinCaps offense delivered a scoring reprise in the ninth with a bit of "Razzle Dazzle" in the form of two solo home runs. Ryan Miller led off the inning with his fifth longball of 2014, and two batters later, said "Bye Bye Birdie" to a baseball he sent over the wall in right to tie the game, and it looked like the TinCaps and their sixth walk-off of the year might go together like Danny and Sandy. However, the TinCaps could only catch Greased Lightnin' in a bottle once this night.
In the 10th against Nick Mutz (1-4), Edwards singled and stole second base uncontested, later coming in to put the Hot Rods in front for good. Colton Reavis (2-1) notched the win.
Additionally, Jake Bauers' 18-game hitting streak came to an end in an 0-for-2 effort. Bowling Green played the Midwest League rookie in a shift which featured three infielders to the right of second base. He grounded into that twice, and was also walked twice, once intentionally. He has still reached base in 27 straight games.
Fort Wayne will look on the bright side of life in game two of the three-game set, scheduled for Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. The scheduled starters are Payton Baskette for the TinCaps and Ryne Stanek for the Hot Rods. The game can be seen on XFINITY 81 and heard on ESPN Radio 1380 and TheFanIndiana.com.
