Norfolk Tides News Release

Garrett Olson turned in another strong outing on the mound, but Durham rallied with three late runs to knock off the Tides 3-2 Wednesday afternoon.

Olson (0-4) took the loss despite posting another quality outing against the Bulls. The 23-year-old southpaw allowed three runs on six hits, striking out nine without issuing a walk. Olson has struck out 19 batters and allowed five runs on 10 hits in his last 15.0 innings (all against Durham), but once again was denied his first win due to a quality start by an opponent.

Durham starter Andy Sonnanstine (4-2) held the Tides' offense in check, and for the second time in a week helped deny Olson a win. The 24-year-old right-hander allowed two runs on five hits in 7.2 innings, striking out five without walking a batter. His performance came on the heels of his last outing against the Tides, when he did not allow a run over eight shutout innings to out-duel Olson and the Tides 3-0 on Friday night.

Norfolk jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on a solo home run off the bat of shortstop Eider Torres in the second inning. Torres also added a double later in the contest to lead the Tides' seven hit attack.

The score stayed at 1-0 until the bottom of the 6th, when Durham designated hitter Shawn Riggans lofted a two-run home run over the left field wall to put the Bulls up 2-1. Durham added to their lead in the 7th inning on an RBI double by former Tide Jorge Velandia.

Norfolk picked up their second run in the 8th inning on an RBI single by Cesar Crespo, but Durham closer Scott Dohmann pitched a scoreless 9th to help the Bulls post their third straight win to open the four-game series. Norfolk has now dropped five straight games to the Bulls, and 9 of their last 13 contests overall.

The two teams will conclude their four-game series with a 7:00 contest from Durham Bulls Athletic Park on Thursday night. Jim Johnson (1-1, 2.74) is set to take the hill for the Tides against Durham righty Mitch Talbot (1-4, 10.08).
