Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS -- Right-hander Josh Banks needed just 92 pitches for his second complete-game win of the season and third baseman John Hattig's RBI single in the fourth ended up being a game winner as Syracuse edged Indianapolis, 2-1, Wednesday afternoon at Victory Field.
The Chiefs improve to 13-18 overall and 4-11 on the road, while the Indians fall to 19-12 overall and 9-8 at home. Indianapolis continues to lead the International League's West Division despite the setback.
Banks (9.0 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 SO), who also fired a seven-inning complete game against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on April 20, is now 4-0 with a 3.57 ERA. The performance was his fourth quality start in just six outings this season.
Syracuse cracked the scoreboard in the first when CF Wayne Lydon roped a single to center, moved to second on a walk, advanced to third on a groundout and came plateward on LF John-Ford Griffin's base knock to center.
Indianapolis evened the count with a run in the second. 3B Russ Johnson smashed a double to left and came the rest of the way on back-to-back groundouts.
The game's final run came in the fourth when Chiefs 1B Kevin Barker drew a one-out walk and eventually scored on Hattig's 20th RBI of the campaign.
Lydon and Hattig had two hits apiece for Syracuse, while 2B Luis Ordaz notched a pair of base knocks for the Tribe.
Indianapolis LHP Sean Burnett (7.0 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 SO) was pinned with the loss. He has now dropped three consecutive decisions after winning his first three starts of the year.
The Indians bullpen -- RHP Chris Hernandez (1.0 IP, 1 SO) and RHP Mark Corey (1.0 IP, 2 BB) -- combined for two scoreless innings after Burnett departed. Hernandez, who was promoted from Double-A Altoona (Pa.) just before the contest, was making his Triple-A debut.
The game was delayed 30 minutes at the outset due to rain.
The two clubs wrap up their four-game series on Thursday at 11 a.m. Indians RHP Bryan Bullington is expected to face Chiefs RHP Ty Taubenheim.
The contest will be carried by ESPN-950 AM and IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley. The pre-game show begins at 10:40 a.m.
It will be the second of three Baseball in Education days at Victory Field. BIE participants will learn about the benefits of daily exercise and making wise nutrition choices during the National Institute for Fitness and Sport's pre-game program from 10-10:30 a.m.
