ThunderBolts Fall In First Half Finale

Crestwood, IL - The Windy City ThunderBolts were swept by the Washington Wild Things to finish up the first half of the 2005 season. The ThunderBolts fell by a score of 9-4.

After scoring single runs in the second and third innings, the Wild Things plated three in both the fourth and fifth innings. In the fourth, catcher Randy McGarvey led things off with a single. Chris Sidick drew a walk to put two on with none out. Following a strike out by first baseman Andy Hudak, Bruce Baldwin singled to drive in McGarvey. A single by Ryan McGraw pushed Sidick and Baldwin across the plate to make it a 5-0 Washington advantage.

The ThunderBolts battled back for one in the bottom of the fourth. A single by second baseman Clemente Bonilla plated catcher Jason Alcott who had previously singled.

In the fifth, Sidick nailed a triple to right with no one out to score Mike Arbinger and McGarvey. Another run was scored in the inning to stretch the Wild Thing lead to 8-1. An additional run was scored in the bottom of the sixth to put the ThunderBolts down 9-1.

Windy City bats came alive in the bottom of the eighth, striking for two runs. Outfielder Justin Niefer singled and came around to score on a double by Jerome McCoy. A single by Jose Gutierrez allowed McCoy to cross the plate. Another rally was mounted by the ThunderBolts in the bottom of the ninth, but they came up short in the 9-4 final.

ThunderBolt starter Scott Anderson had a rough start, coming off a spectacular complete game effort last time out. Anderson was touched up for seven runs in four-plus innings. The loss drops Anderson's record to 1-2 on the season. Relievers Matt Hines and Steve Ziroli combined for three scoreless innings to finish up the game. Starter Brendon Davis earned the win for Washington, going six innings to improve his record to 3-1. Mike Grady earned a three inning save for the Wild Things, his first save of the season.

ThunderBolt right fielder Nick Johnson and Manager Brent Bowers will make the trek out to Washington, Pennsylvania for the Frontier League All-Star game which will take place at Falconi Field on Wednesday night. The ThunderBolts will return to action on Friday night at 7:05pm to take on the Rockford RiverHawks at Hawkinson Ford Field.
