Richmond Roosters News Release
Richmond, Indiana - Richmond lost 5-3 on Sunday to the Gateway Grizzlies, the sixth loss in seven games for the Roosters taking them to eight games under .500. Richmond got a couple of early runs, but allowed the Grizzlies to rally and take the win.
The Roosters started quickly with two runs in the first inning. Josh Hollingsworth hit a one-out solo homer off the scoreboard in left for the first run. O.J. Garza followed that up with RBI single to score Gerald Miller and give Richmond an early 2-0 lead. The Roosters was ahead until the fifth inning when Gateway tied things up. Gary Gilbert and Oscar Vargas scored to make it a 2-2 game. The Grizzlies managed to get three more runs in the seventh thanks to a run-scoring fielder's choice by Jimmy Reiter and two-run blast from Shawn Smarsh making it a 5-2 game.
Richmond worked a run across in its half of the seventh when Gerald Miller singled to right scoring Mike Reese. That drew the Roosters to within two runs at 5-3, but that would be as close as they would get as Gateway went on to win. Brandon Smith (6-3) earned the win with Chad Little (1) getting the save. Jesen Merle (2-2) took the loss for Richmond.
The Roosters will play the final game of the series on Monday at 6:35 p.m. (Indiana time). Matt Schweitzer (1-4, 3.55 ERA) will start for Richmond while Eric Szczur (2-1, 6.75 ERA) will toe the mound for Gateway.
