
Thunderbirds Fall to Bayhawks

Erie, PA - Despite five players scoring in double figures, the New Mexico Thunderbirds (14-20) dropped their fifth consecutive game on Saturday night to the Erie Bayhawks (22-9), 123-105.
Ivan Johnson had his second consecutive big game for the Bayhawks, scoring 29 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.
The Thunderbirds had four players in double figures, led by Jamine Peterson who had 22 points and J.R. Giddens who had 12 points and eight rebounds.
In the first quarter, with the Bayhawks leading 22-21, Walter Sharpe scored six straight points for the Thunderbirds to give them a 27-22. Sharpe had eight points at the end of the quarter and the T-Birds led 27-26.
The Thunderbirds opened the lead back up to 31-28 in the second quarter, but Erie answered with a 22-6 run to take make the score 50-37. Tasmin Mitchell led all scorers with 16 points and Erie led the T-Birds 57-48 at the half.
The T-Birds scored the first five points of the second half to cut the deficit to 57-53. The Bayhawks would respond with a 12-4 run to open the lead back up to 71-59. The T-Birds trailed by double figures for most of the third quarter, but went on a late run to cut the deficit to 84-78 heading into the final quarter.
The Bayhawks started the fourth quarter by hitting back-to-back 3-pointers to take a 90-78 lead. Abdulai Jalloh hit a 3-pointer for the T-Birds with 8:40 to go that cut the lead to seven points, but that would be the closest they would get. Erie would then go on a quick 7-2 lead to give them a double digit lead and control for good.
The Thunderbirds will try to avoid a three-game sweep tomorrow afternoon when they take on the Erie Bayhawks on at noon. The T-Birds will return home for March Giveaway Madness beginning on March 2 for Defined Fitness Night with a T-Bird Magnet giveaway.
