Erie BayHawks News Release
Erie, Pennsylvania - Ivan Johnson led the BayHawks to another victory over the New Mexico Thunderbirds with his eighth double-double of the season scoring 29 points and pulling down 12 boards, as Erie extended their win streak to seven games and improved to 22-9.
The BayHawks' first quarter proved to be a rocky one and the Thunderbirds kept the game close through the first frame. After 13 lead changes in the game's first 15 minutes the BayHawks grabbed the reigns and outscored the Thunderbirds 31-21 in the second and never looked back.
Johnson scored 14 third quarter points as Erie held a six-point margin heading in to the final frame. But Erie's lead only grew as the final margin of 18 points was their largest lead of the game.
Seven BayHawks scored in double-figures. In addition to Johnson, Tasmin Mitchell finished with 28, Blake Ahearn added 19, Derek Raivio had 14, and Kyle Goldcamp and Tasheed Carr notched 10 apiece. Ahearn snapped his consecutive free throw mark at 57 straight when his fifth attempt of the game rolled out in the third quarter. He is now 60-of-61 from the stripe on the season.
The Thunderbirds, who dropped to 14-20, were led by Jamine Peterson who had 22, Abdulai Jalloh added 20, Walter Sharpe chipped in 18, Marcus Hubbard had 16, and J.R. Giddens notched 12.
The same two teams meet again for game three of their series on Sunday at 2 pm at the Tullio Arena.
