THUNDER TAKE THREE OF FOUR- Wichita took six of a possible eight points last week despite playing with a depleted roster. For the second straight week, Wichita played four games in five days beginning on Wednesday night against Arizona. Behind a hat trick from Kevin Seibel, Wichita exploded for its highest scoring output of the season with an 8-4 win over the Sundogs. Five players had multi-point games including Summers with four assists, Bourret with three points (1g, 2a) and Jarred Mohr with three assists. On Friday night, Wichita went down to Allen, TX in a battle for first place. The Thunder fell behind early and couldn't recover, losing 5-0. Several key players left the game due to injury and Wichita finished out the contest with just seven forwards. The following night in Wichita, Andrew Martens tallied the game-winner in overtime to give Wichita a 3-2 win against Tulsa. The momentum carried over to Sunday afternoon as Wichita smothered Quad City behind a hat trick from Chris Chappell for a 5-1 victory. Chappell scored a goal even strength, on the power play and shorthanded. It was the first shorthanded goal Quad City had given up all season. Wichita and Allen continue to see-saw back and forth for first place as the Thunder sit one point ahead of the Americans with 56 points.
HATS A PLENTY - Kevin Seibel and Chris Chappell each recorded a hat trick this past week. Prior to that, the Thunder have had three hat tricks this season. For both players, it was their first professional hat trick of their careers. Seibel has 11 points (3g, 8a) in January and Chappell has seven (3g, 4a).
MAIZE AND BLUE- Bryan Hogan won his first start in Thunder blue on Sunday. The University of Michigan product was picked up in a trade with Dayton earlier in the week and stopped 20 of 21 shots he faced against Quad City. Hogan was four minutes away from earning a shutout before the Mallards scored on a power play. Hogan recently earned his first professional shutout in a Gems uniform against the Rapid City Rush on January 20th.
HELPING HAND- Alex Bourret and Matt Summers have a knack for finding their teammates. The two have combined for 13 assists over the last five games. Both have eight points over that span as Bourret has two goals and six assists while Summers has one goal and seven assists. Bourret has seven points (1g, 6a) since returning to Wichita on January 22nd.
IRON MEN- Travis Wight and Jarred Mohr are the only players to have played in every game so far this season. Due to injuries and call-ups, the two have flourished while logging a lot of minutes. In 41 games, Mohr has 21 points (4g, 17a) and is a +12 while Wight is a +7.
