BACK ON TRACK- One week removed from a three game losing skid, Wichita returned to form this past weekend. Behind a two goal effort from Matt Robinson, the Thunder jumped out to a three goal lead Wednesday night against Missouri, winning 4-1. Robinson, who led the team in goals a season ago with 39, had been held off the score sheet for nine games before equaling his season total. The Thunder outshot Missouri 15-5 in the first period and Adam Russo stopped 25 of 26 shots to earn the win. On Friday night, Robinson added another tally (5) and Wichita won a see-saw affair, 4-2 in Tulsa at the BOK Center. Aaron Davis scored two and the game winner with a tie game at two in the third period to help Wichita plug the leak against the Oilers. The Thunder had dropped the last three meetings to Tulsa prior to this past weekend. Back in Wichita on Saturday night, the Thunder dominated through two periods, outshooting Tulsa 33-11 en route to a 4-2 win. The Thunder had four different scorers and Adam Russo won his third consecutive game to improve Wichita's record to 11-4-0 and back into first place in the Berry Conference.
SHUTTING THE DOOR- Wichita netminder Adam Russo was outstanding this past week, winning three straight games and stopping 72 of 77 shots. His goals against was a mere 1.66 with five goals allowed over that span and now is tied for the league lead with eight wins. Overall, Russo is in eighth place with a 2.64 GAA and a .897 SPCT.
700 CLUB- 12-year veteran Daniel Tetrault joined an elite group this past Friday night in Tulsa as he played in his 700th game as a pro. Tetrault is also approaching an impressive milestone. With one more point this past week, Tetrault is just three points shy (166) of former Thunder defenseman Sean O'Reilly for the franchise lead in most points scored by a Thunder defenseman. O'Reilly played 311 games from 1997-02, scoring 169 points during that span while Tetrault has played 256 games in a Thunder uniform.
400 CLUB- Head Coach Kevin McClelland also joined elite company, as he coached in his 400th game in the Central Hockey League this past Friday night. In six seasons, McClelland has amassed a record of 232-137-32 with Mississippi, Colorado and Wichita. A member of the Edmonton Oilers' dynasty in the 1980's, McClelland won four Stanley Cups and played in 588 NHL games where he scored 68 goals, 112 assists and collected a staggering 1,672 penalty minutes.
D-MEN- Andrew Martens had another stellar weekend offensively. The Friendswood, TX native added three more points and sits in first for goals and second place for points scored by defensemen with 15 (6g, 9a). Daniel Tetrault is tied for fifth with 11 points (4g, 7a) while Jarred Mohr (+15) and Martens (+14) are at the top of the plus-minus list.
SCORING- The Thunder's top two lines got rolling this past week. The line of Aaron Davis, Brett and Colin Hemingway combined for 14 points while Thomas Beauregard, Alex Bourret and Matt Robinson combined for 13 points. Brett Hemingway leads the team in scoring and sits in a tie for fifth in the CHL with 19 points (9g, 10a). Aaron Davis is tied with Hemingway with nine goals, four this past week and is in second place in the CHL with four game winning goals. Davis and Hemingway both have three game goal scoring streaks, second best in the CHL.
SPECIAL TEAMS- Wichita's power play away from home continues to be their strength on special teams. The Thunder power play unit is second in the league on the road, going 10 for 35 at a clip of 28.6% while going just six for 42 at home at a clip of 14.3%. Overall, Wichita is in seventh place at a rate of 20.8%. The penalty killing unit has been stronger on home ice, killing off 30 of 37 attempts at a rate of 81.1%, which is sixth in the league at home. Overall, the Thunder have killed off 61 of 79 attempts at a rate of 77.2%, which is good for 10th place.
THUNDERBOLTS... Wichita is averaging 3.73 goals a contest, tied for first with Allen... The Thunder has given up 2.80 goals against, tied for fifth... Wichita is first overall in shots allowed (25.73/game) and has given up just 117 shots in the third period all season...The Thunder has only allowed 10 goals against in the final period...Wichita is tied in second with five shorthanded goals while being one of just two teams to not allow a goal shorthanded... In one goal games, Wichita is 5-2-0... When leading after one, The Thunder is 5-0-0... Tied after two periods, Wichita is 5-1-0...When outshooting the opponent, Wichita is 8-2-0... Justin Sawyer has a 12-game penalty minute streak, racking up 49 minutes, with the next closest player being former Thunder forward Ryan Hand, who has a 5-game streak... The Thunder is 6-1-0 against teams from the Turner Conference while going 5-3-0 in division... Through nine home games, Wichita sits in second overall in attendance, averaging 5,876.
UPCOMING WEEK- Wichita will have a rare Saturday night off this week. The Thunder host the Evansville IceMen Friday night at 7:05pm, who sit in first place in the Turner Conference. Wichita will then take on Tulsa Sunday afternoon at 5:05pm at INTRUST Bank Arena. After Sunday, Wichita will not see the Oilers until Christmas Day in Tulsa.
