Thunder Use Long Ball to Down WhiteWings

ROBSTOWN - The Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings allowed five home runs in a game for the first time this season in an 11-4 loss to the Coastal Bend Thunder Tuesday at Richard M. Borchard Fairgrounds Field.

The WhiteWings (31-34) struck against Doug Brandt (3-6) right away. Domenic Di Ricco drew a one-out walk, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Luany Sanchez to make it 1-0.

The Thunder (23-42) responded against Misael DeJesus (4-5) in the bottom of the first when Alex Fernandez hit a two-out two-run double to make it 2-1 Thunder.

Lamar Guy led off the bottom of the second with his fifth home run of the season. One out later, DeJesus walked the bases loaded, and after getting a pop out, allowed a two-run single to Brian Nichols to make it 5-1 Thunder.

Paddy Matera and Giani Rosa hit their first home runs while Leivi Ventura hit his 16th against Miguel Matos as part of an eight-batter, five-run fifth that put the Thunder up 10-1.

With two outs in the top of the sixth, the WhiteWings answered. Arlon Quiroz walked and Eric Gonzalez singled to set-up a two-run double by Kevin Griffin to make it 10-3.

Nichols launched his 17th home run of the season in the bottom of the sixth against Mickey Cassidy to make it 11-3.

Welington Dotel gave the WhiteWings that run back with an RBI-single against Raul Trevino in the top of the seventh.

Trevino pitched the final three and one-third innings for his first save.

The WhiteWings and Thunder play game two of this four-game series on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Steve Raburn (2-1) is expected to face right-hander JJ Trujillo (4-5).
