Broncos hurt by the long ball against Colts, fall into fifth place in standings

San Angelo, TX- The Broncos (31-35) and the Colts (34-31) were tied 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth when the Colts hit three home runs in the inning to take a 7-3 lead and ultimately defeating the Broncos 11-3 in game one of the series. With the loss the Broncos fall 3.5 games back of San Angelo for third place in the United League standings and one game back of the White Wings for fourth place.

The Broncos arrived in San Angelo for the first time in 2010 tied for the fourth and final playoff spot in the United League. RHP Matt Gibbs (4-3) made the start for the Broncos, facing off against RHP Ezequiel Astacio (6-4).

San Angelo loaded the bases in the top of the first with nobody out against Gibbs and their clean-up batter at the plate Josh Collazzo. Collazzo knocked in Isaac Garcia from third with a sacrifice fly and the Colts led 1-0.

D.J Dixon tied the game for the Broncos in the top of the second with a solo home hat go out of Foster Field over the right field wall and the score was 1-1.

In the bottom of the fourth the Colts added a run after a fielder's choice off the bat of Jason Crosland. A throwing error on the play moved Crosland to second base and he came home on the RBI single by David Cardona. On the play the trail runner Landon Camp was thrown out at the plate by right fielder Doug Thennis, so the score was 2-1 Colts. The very next batter Tyler Goodro hit a single with Cardona at second base and Doug Thennis flashed the arm again. For the second straight play Thennis nailed a Colt at home plate; the second ended the inning.

Bottom of the fifth the Colts tacked on another insurance run after a one out walk to Isaac Garcia, Ronnie Gaines brought him home with an RBI triple and the score was 3-1 Colts.

In the top of the sixth the Broncos battled back, with one Jonathan Dziomba doubled; picking up his first hit with the Broncos. Pacheco singled and an error moved him to second base after the Dziomba double. Salvador Paniagua picked up a huge single to drive both runs home and tie the game at 3-3.

Gibbs began the bottom of the sixth and gave up back to back homeruns to Jason Crosland, his 19th of the season and Landon Camp, his 16th of the season and the Colts re-took the lead 5-3. Gibb then retired the next two batters he faced before allowing a single to Butch Ballez. Isaac Garcia then came to the plate and hit his fourth home run of the year, a two run shot to extend the Colts lead to 7-3.

RHP Ezequiel Astacio came out after six innings of work allowing three runs (two earned), seven hits; he walked one and struck out nine batters.

San Angelo tacked on two more runs in the seventh against LHP Thomas Vessella (0-0) on an RBI single by Landon Camp and RBI double by David Cardona to push the lead to 9-3 Colts.

San Angelo rounded out their scoring in the bottom of the eighth with an RBI triple by Mark Ramos and an RBI single by Ronnie Gaines to make the lead 11-3.

The Broncos did not score in the final three frames, stranding a runner at second base in the seventh, hitting into an inning ending double play in the eighth and going in order in the ninth.
