Big Sixth Inning Propels WhiteWings Past Thunder

ROBSTOWN - The Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings scored six runs in the sixth innings en route to a 13-4 victory over the Coastal Bend Thunder Tuesday at Richard M. Borchard Fairgrounds Field.

The WhiteWings (31-33) are now winners of 12 of their last 15 games while the Thunder (22-42) are losers of seven-straight.

Up 4-2 entering the top of the sixth, the WhiteWings got the rally started with one out as Roberto Rodriguez reached on an infield-single and Javis Diaz hit an RBI-triple. Domenic Di Ricco hit an RBI-single and moved to second on the throw to knock out starter Jake Lideka (0-1). Johnny Montoya came in, walked Yeurys Tejeda and allowed an RBI-single to Luany Sanchez. One out later, Arlon Quiroz hit his team-leading 10th home run of the season to make it 10-2.

Di Ricco had a career-night, going 4-for-6 with one double, three RBI and three runs scored.

The Thunder struck against David Cross (5-5) right away. Mike Goss led off the bottom of the first with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a one-out double by Leivi Ventura to make it 1-0.

The WhiteWings responded against Lideka in the top of the third. With one out, Juan Cabrera singled. One out later, Diaz drew an eight-pitch walk to push Cabrera to second. Di Ricco followed with an RBI-single to tie the game at 1-1.

Luany Sanchez led off the top of the fourth with a single. One out later, Quiroz singled and Eric Gonzalez hit an RBI-double to make it 2-1.

The WhiteWings loaded the bases with one out in the top of the fifth to set-up a two-run single by Welington Dotel, making it 4-1.

Goss hit an RBI-single with two outs in the bottom of the fifth to bring the Thunder within 4-2.

The WhiteWings added two runs in the top of the seventh and one in the top of the ninth while the Thunder scored two in the bottom of the eighth to complete the scoring.

The WhiteWings and Thunder play game two of this four-game series on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Misael DeJesus (4-4) is expected to face left-hander Doug Brandt (2-6).
