
Thunder Swept In Twin-Bill; Magic Number At "3"

(Akron, OH)- Akron swept a doubleheader from the Thunder on Friday night, picking up both wins in their final at-bat, 10-9 in the opener and 1-0 in the nightcap. Despite the losses, the thunder's Magic Number to make the playoffs drop to "2" with a Binghamton loss.
In Game #1, Akron (81-51) jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but the Thunder responded with five runs in the 3rd Inning, including a three-run homer by RF Shelley Duncan, for the lead.Trenton (73-59) added three more runs in the 4th Inning, including an RBI triple by LF Justin Christian for an 8-4 lead. Thunder starter Jason Jones, though, was lifted after struggling to start the bottom of the fourth. Akron scored twice more int hat inning to close the gap to 8-6.
Duncan's second homer of the game in the 6th Inning put Trenton ahead by a 9-6 score. The Aeros came right back with three runs in the bottom of the inning to tie the game. A throwing error with two outs on a ground ball allowed the tying runs to score. After solid relief pitching by both teams in the 7th and 8th Innings, Sandberg homered to right-center with two outs in the ninth for the game-winner off Trenton reliever Gerardo Casadiego. Akron's Jim Ed Warden (4-2) tossed a scoreless 9th Inning for the win.
Game #2 saw a pitcher's duel between Trenton's Francisco Butto and Akron's Bear Bay. Both pitcher's blanked the opposition. Bay tossed five shutout innings, while Butto worked 5 2/3 scoreless innings. Akron won the game in the 7th Inning as they loaded the bases with two outs. 1B Ryan Mulhern lined a Casadiego pitch into left field for the game-winner.
Casadiego took the loss in both games for the Thunder and is now 2-3 on the year.
The series continues on Saturday at 7:05 PM. Matt Childers (2-2, 2.91) starts for the Thunder against Akron's Adam Miller (13-6, 2.88).
