Wichita Thunder News Release
WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Thunder edged the Missouri Mavericks in a shootout 3-2 at the Wichita Ice Center on Saturday night.
Chris Trafford netted two goals, including the shootout game-winner to help the Thunder sweep their two-game exhibition series from the expansion Mavericks.
For the second consecutive night, the Thunder scored first. With the game scoreless in the second, defenseman Jim Jorgensen fired a shot that rang off the corner of the crossbar and into the net against Mavericks' goaltender Mike Gorman at 11:59. Jason Duda and Joel Hanson picked up assists. Missouri tied the game at 16:22 when former Thunder defenseman Andrew Davis scored a power play goal on a backdoor pass from Bill Vandemeer.
Wichita regained the lead at 5:20 in the third when Trafford snuck a shot past new goaltender Dan Earles, assisted by Mike Kneeland who had two points on Friday night. Ted Vandemeer scored on a breakaway at 10:27 to tie it for Missouri. Wichita staved off nearly three minutes of Missouri power play before the game went straight from regulation to the shootout.
