Thunder Sweeps Missouri

WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Thunder edged the Missouri Mavericks in a shootout 3-2 at the Wichita Ice Center on Saturday night.

Chris Trafford netted two goals, including the shootout game-winner to help the Thunder sweep their two-game exhibition series from the expansion Mavericks.

For the second consecutive night, the Thunder scored first. With the game scoreless in the second, defenseman Jim Jorgensen fired a shot that rang off the corner of the crossbar and into the net against Mavericks' goaltender Mike Gorman at 11:59. Jason Duda and Joel Hanson picked up assists. Missouri tied the game at 16:22 when former Thunder defenseman Andrew Davis scored a power play goal on a backdoor pass from Bill Vandemeer.

Wichita regained the lead at 5:20 in the third when Trafford snuck a shot past new goaltender Dan Earles, assisted by Mike Kneeland who had two points on Friday night. Ted Vandemeer scored on a breakaway at 10:27 to tie it for Missouri. Wichita staved off nearly three minutes of Missouri power play before the game went straight from regulation to the shootout.

The Thunder won the shootout three goals to one, with Trafford, Kneeland, and Jason Duda each scoring. Scott Campbell earned the win, saving three of four shootout attempts.

Thunder netminder Jamie Gilbert started the game, saving nine of nine shots, playing exactly 30 minutes. Gilbert finishes the preseason having stopped all 30 of the shots he faced.

The Thunder finishes the preseason with a record of 2-0-0. Wichita now awaits the 2009-10 regular season opener versus the Amarillo Gorillas on Friday, October 16th. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m. For tickets, call the Thunder office at (316) 264-GOAL.
