Odessa Jackalopes News Release
(Odessa, TX) - Behind the play of goaltender Joel Martin and Paul Kelly's game winner, the Odessa Jackalopes topped the Tulsa Oilers, 2-1, on Saturday night at the Ector County Coliseum. The Jackalopes won both preseason games against the Oilers and will open their regular season on Friday against Corpus Christi.
The lone goal of the first period was scored by Odessa's Richard Paul from Kory Karlander and Brian Swiniarski. It was Paul's second goal in as many preseason games and gave the Jackalopes a 1-0 lead entering the break.
Both teams picked up momentum in the second period, but Tulsa tied the game on a goal from Michael Beausoleil. TJ Caig and Jeff Zatorski added the assists. The physical play also picked up in the middle frame as Odessa's Garrett Gruenke and Tulsa's Matt Smyth earned fighting majors at the end of the period. It was 1-1 after two periods of play.
In the third period Paul Kelly broke the tie with a power play goal at 9:15. Dominic Leveille and Phil Plante had the assists. The Oilers pulled the goalie in the final minute, but the Jackalopes held on for the win.
Goaltender Joel Martin stopped 26 of 27 shots for the Jackalopes to preserve the win.
The Odessa Jackalopes are the Central Hockey League affiliate for the NHL's New York Islanders and the AHL's Bridgeport Sound Tigers.
