Kansas City Mavericks News Release
INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Missouri Mavericks lost to the Wichita Thunder in a shootout, 3-2, Saturday night at Wichita Ice Center. Former Thunder player Andrew Davis and Ted Vandermeer scored goals for the Mavericks who finished the pre-season schedule 0-1-1 against the Thunder.
The first period was a defensive battle that didn't see a lot of shots with Wichita outshooting Missouri 7-5 in the period. Neither team was able to score in the opening frame.
Jim Jorgensen opened the scoring in the second period at the 11:59 mark to give the Thunder a 1-0 lead, but the Mavericks answered shortly after. Former Thunder defenseman Andrew Davis scored the first goal for the Mavericks at the 16:22 mark of the second on assists from Bill Vandermeer and Chad Hinz. After two periods, the Mavericks held a slight edge in shots at 13-12, but the teams were all square at one goal apiece.
The teams each added another goal in the third period with Ted Vandermeer scoring for the Mavericks at 10:27. The game was forced into overtime and eventually a shootout with a 2-2 score.
Wichita scored on three of four chances in the shootout against Mavericks' goaltender Dan Earles and Missouri was only able to notch one goal on four chances.
Missouri finished 1-8 on the power play, but killed all eight of Wichita's chances. The Mavericks also outshot the Thunder 31-28 in the game.
"It was good to get the veterans into the lineup tonight, we looked like a different team," said Mavericks Head Coach Scott Hillman. "We had a lot of quality scoring chances and still didn't have Simon Watson and Carlyle Lewis in the lineup."
The Mavericks began training camp with 27 players and the roster must be trimmed to 19. Hillman will make cuts on Sunday.
"It is going to be real tough to make these decisions," added Hillman. "The guys that were in the lineup tonight showed a lot of veteran experience, some have earned a spot and some have fallen short, but overall it was a great training camp."
"We are very pleased with our first training camp," said Mavericks' President and General Manager Brent Thiessen. "We are excited about our team and look forward to the season starting next week."
The Mavericks begin their inaugural season on Friday, October 16 on the road against the Rapid City Rush. Missouri will play the first nine games on the road before the team's home opener on November 13 at the Independence Events Center.
