WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Thunder defeated the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees 5-2 on Saturday night at the Kansas Coliseum. Five different Thunder players accounted for Wichita's goals, while the team finished a combined +10. Chris Tarkir opened the scoring and gave Wichita a 1-0 lead at 16:07 in the first period.
Wichita broke the game open early in the second, scoring three goals in less than five minutes. Jason Tessier scored a power play goal on a two-man advantage at 2:19 to make it 2-0. Troy Ofukany followed with a goal at 3:09. Jordan Hack found the backdoor on a feed from Ofukany at 7:08 giving Wichita a commanding 4-0 lead.
The Bees finally scored 2:00 into the third period, with Grant Goekcner-Zoeller cutting the Thunder lead to 4-1. Jason Duda made it 5-1 Wichita when he tipped in a shot from Greg Cassista at 14:10. Aaron Lee scored a late goal for Rio Grande Valley, but Wichita prevailed with the win.
Ofukany finished the night with a goal and two assists, while Chris Greene and Bryan Nathe each had two assists. Ofukany has scored a goal in three consecutive games.
The victory was the first Saturday home win for the Thunder this season. Wichita outshot Rio Grande Valley 36 to 35. The Thunder was a perfect 6 for 6 on the penalty kill.
