Wichita Thunder News Release
AMARILLO, TX- The Wichita Thunder defeated the Amarillo Gorillas 6-3 at the Amarillo Civic Center on Friday night. Bobby Hughes and Paul Kelly each had three points while Scott Campbell saved 42 of 45 for the win. The Thunder scored a season-high six goals.
Wichita scored early and often in the first, taking a 1-0 lead just 51 seconds into the game. After both Kevin Cooper and Tomas Kelmpa came inches shy of the net, Bobby Hughs popped in a rebound to the left of Tuomas Lohtander for the early goal. At 6:27, Joel Hanson played a perfect screen in front of the net and buried a snapshot from the left faceoff circle just under the Amarillo crossbar. The Thunder extended its lead to 3-0 at 11:55. Kevin Cooper, who had just been let out of the penalty box, ranged after a loose puck by the Gorillas' goal line and cut left towards the crease before beating Lohtander on a shot to the long side of the net. Amarillo scored two of their own, beginning at 12:55 to get on the scoreboard. Andy Brennan picked up a loose puck in the high slot and scored on a shot to the right corner. Chris Cloud made it a one-goal game at 15:25 when Jason Chafe's shot from the boards came straight down in the crease, allowing Cloud to knock in the rebound.
Wichita quieted down the Gorillas' momentum, racking up three more goals in the second to open a 6-2 lead. During a scramble in front of the Amarillo crease, Neil Clark poked in a loose puck for a power play goal at 11:03. Ryan Campbell helped the Thunder cash in on a two-man advantage at 17:53. Campbell received a cross-crease pass from Paul Kelly and roofed the puck on the backdoor of Mike Brown who relieved Lohtander late in the first period. With 2.2 seconds left in the period, Clark led a charge up the ice and set up Kelly in the slot who then shot the puck past Brown's right side.
Jake Morissette's goal at 1:27 in the third proved to be the final of the night for either side. The Thunder finished the night 2 for 3 on the power play while going 3 for 3 on the penalty kill. The Thunder's 41 shots tied a season-high.
The Thunder faces Amarillo tomorrow night at the INTRUST Bank Arena at 7:05 p.m. For tickets, call the Thunder office at (316) 264-GOAL.
