Mississippi RiverKings News Release

SOUTHAVEN, MS --- The Mississippi RiverKings won their third straight game and moved within five points of idle Bossier-Shreveport for third place in the Central Hockey League Northern Conference on Friday night, handily defeating the Texas Brahmas, 7-3, at the DeSoto Civic Center in Southaven. The victory was the RiverKings 30th of the year (30-23-7) and set the stage for a conference showdown with the Mudbugs on Saturday night in Southaven.

Mississippi and the Brahmas traded a trio of goals each in the first period. Former RiverKings' forward Matt Pierce opened the scoring for Texas with his 16th goal of the year at 4:30 of the initial session.

The RiverKings answered that with a power play goal from the left point by Andrew Lackner at 6:23 of the period, assisted by Darrell Stoddard and Ryan Held for a 1-1 tie.

Texas then took a 3-1 lead later in the period on goals from Lee Jubinville and Justin Kinnunen, but the RiverKings responded with another power play goal from Matt Summers and a penalty shot goal from Held.

Summers' 12th goal of the season came at 14:52 of the first period, a pretty back hand shot through traffic, assisted by Derek Landmesser and Kevin Truelson.

Held was then hooked on a breakaway attempt and given a penalty shot, which he converted for his 32nd goal of the year at 16:38, a goal that tied the game at 3-3 at the end of the first period of play.

Mississippi then took a 4-3 lead in the second period on their third power play goal of the night, scored by Kevin Truelson, assisted by Landmesser and Stoddard at 3:12. It was Truelson's eighth power play goal of the year and would eventually become the game-winning goal of the night.

The RiverKings broke the game open in the third period with three more goals. Stoddard was credited for his 12th goal of the year at 3:43, when the Brahmas sent an errant pass into their own net.

Summers kept the offensive onslaught going with his second goal of the night, and 13th of the year, assisted by Glenn Detulleo and Dane Marshall at 6:23 for a 6-3 lead.

Marshall finished off the scoring with his fifth goal of the year, assisted by Lackner and Ken Davis, a power play goal at 10:20 for the final score of 7-3.

Mississippi outshot the Brahmas 36-31 for the game. Goaltender Kyle McNulty (9-15-1) won his third straight game between the pipes with a 28-save performance for the RiverKings. Brett Jaeger (19-14-2) was tagged with the loss for Texas, giving up two of the five goals, but one was the game-winning tally from Truelson.

The RiverKings were a perfect 4-for-4 for the game on the power play, while Texas was scoreless in two extra man opportunities. Before tomorrow night's game, the number 13 jersey of all-time scoring leader Don Parsons will be retired in a pre-game ceremony.

Parsons will be on hand to chat with fans and sign autographs during the game and afterward at TGI Friday's in Southaven, the official post-game party headquarters for the RiverKings.
