Kansas City Mavericks News Release
INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Missouri Mavericks fell in a shootout, 4-3, to the Odessa Jackalopes Friday night in front of a sellout crowd of 5,800 fans at Independence Events Center. Mike Burgoyne had a pair of goals for the Mavericks, but Jeff Pierce won the game in the sixth round of the shootout for the Jackalopes (44-11-4). Missouri (29-25-6) earned a point in the shootout loss and moved ahead of the Tulsa Oilers by two points for the final spot in the Northern Conference playoffs.
Pierce gave the Jacks a 1-0 lead at the 12:43 mark of the first when he took a centering pass from Sebastien Thinel and chipped it over the shoulder of Mavericks' goaltender Charlie Effinger. The Jackalopes took the lead into the first intermission despite the Mavericks winning the battle in shots at 14-13.
Missouri bounced back with a pair of goals in the second period. Burgoyne tallied his first goal on a five-on-three power play when he blasted a slap shot that beat Jacks' goaltender Joel Martin to the stick side. Toby Lafrance and Jeff Christian earned assists on the tying goal. Jeff MacDermid gave the Mavericks a 2-1 lead when he shoveled the puck into the net in a scrum in front of the net. His goal came at 13:43 of the second and the Mavs took the lead into the third period.
The back-and-forth battle continued in the third period. Philippe Plante tied the game at two on his 13th goal of the season at the 3:13 mark. Thinel regained the lead for Odessa at 11:59 on assists from Alex Dunn and Collin Circelli. The Mavericks bounced back on Burgoyne's second of the night when his shot from a sharp angle snuck under the padding of Martin.
The game remained tied through the remainder of the third period and overtime. It took six rounds of a shootout to decide the winner. Odessa scored on their final four shots in the shootout for the victory including Pierce's game winner in the sixth round. MacDermid, Jordan Foreman and Karl Sellan all scored in the shootout for Missouri, but Martin was equal to the task on the final shot propelling the Jackalopes to victory.
Missouri finished 1 for 5 on the power play and killed all four of the Jackalopes man advantages. Odessa won the battle in shots at 37-30.
The teams will face off again Saturday night, and the game is already sold out, however tickets to the Mavericks' first possible playoff game will go on sale on Tuesday, March 16. Saturday is final home game of the regular season, and the team will host a fundraiser for Ryan Christian, Jeff Christian's daughter, who is currently undergoing cancer treatment at St. Jude's hospital.
