Thunder split DH, White tosses shutout in opener

(Portland, ME)- Steven White scattered three hits in tossing his 3rd career shutout to help the Thunder to a 4-0 win over Portland in Game #1 of a doubleheader on Wednesday night. The Sea Dogs came back to win the nightcap by a 4-2 score.

White allowed three singles with three walks and four strikeouts en route to the win. The Sea Dogs (28-22) did not have a baserunner reach 2nd base in the game. It was the first complete-game shutout for Trenton (27-26) this season and the first for White since August 17, 2004.

Trenton jumped out to the lead in the 2nd Inning against Portland starter Mike Rozier on a solo homer by 1B Shelley Duncan. It was his 9th home run of the season. An RBI double by SS Felix Escalona in the 3rd Inning made it a 2-0 game. The Thunder added two unearned runs in the 4th Inning, including an RBI single by RF Bronson Sardinha. Rozier (0-1) took the loss in his Double-A debut, allowing four runs (one earned) in five innings with one walk and eight strikeouts.

Portland jumped out to a 1st Inning 3-0 lead in the Game #2 against Trenton's Jeremy King. The inning included RBI doubles by 1B Jeremy West and 3B Chad Spann. Escalona came back with a two-run homer off Portland starter Charlie Zink to cut the deficit to 3-2. LF Tyler Minges gave the Sea Dogs a 4-2 lead in the 2nd Inning with an RBI single. King (2-3) allowed four runs on five hits in 1 2/3 innings.

Sea Dogs starter Charlie Zink allowed two runs (one earned) over four innings, but reliever Devern Hansack worked three shutout innings of relief for the win. Hansack (2-2) allowed four hits with three strikeouts.

The series wraps up with a 12:00 noon game on Thursday. Phil Hughes (2-1, 3.99) starts for Trenton against Portland's Jose Vaquedano (3-1, 4.91).
