Thunder rally in ninth for 6-5 win

(New Britain, CT)- Gabe Lopez's RBI single capped a three-run 9th Inning to lead the Thunder to a 6-5 win over New Britain on Monday evening. The win was the 19th of the year in Trenton's final at-bat.

Trenton (55-46) trailed by a 5-2 score entering the 8th Inning, but the Thunder got a triple from Lopez and an RBI single by RF Vince Faison to cut the deficit to 5-3. In the 9th Inning, Trenton started with a Felix Escalona single and back-to-back RBI doubles from 3B Kevin Howard and C Omir Santos to tie the game at 5-5. After a sacrifice bunt moved Santos to 3rd Base. Lopez singled to left to score the go-ahead run. Charlie Manning then retired the Rock Cats (43-56) in the bottom of the ninth to preserve the win. Manning (8-2) tossed three shutout innings for the victory.

New Britain had a 5-2 lead after six innings as they knocked Thunder starter Jason Jones for 12 hits and five runs, including homers by 1B Doug Deeds, C Kyle Geiger and SS Alexi Casilla. Rock Cats starter Errol Simonitsch held the Thunder to two runs over six innings. The early Thunder runs came on a single by Santos (3 x 4, 2 RBI) and a solo homer by 1B Eric Duncan, his 9th of the season and third in the last two games.

The series continues on Tuesday at 11:35 AM. Tyler Clippard (6-10, 4.05) starts for Trenton against New Britain's Kevin Slowey (3-2, 2.65).
