Thunder Rally For 7-6 Win In Portland

(Portland, ME)- Justin Christian scored from 2nd Base on a wild pitch by Portland reliever Randy Beam to score the winning run in a 7-6 Trenton victory over the Portland Sea Dogs on Friday night. The Thunder completed a rally in which they trailed 6-0 after five innings.

Portland (47-29) jumped on Trenton starter Matt DeSalvo for five runs in the 4th Inning. 2B David Bacani had a two-run single for a 3-0 lead, followed by an RBI triple by CF Tyler Minges. DeSalvo allowed five runs and nine hits in 3 2/3 innings. 1B Luis Jimenez added a solo homer off Scott Patterson in the 5th Inning to increase the lead to 6-0.

Trenton (43-37) started their rally in the 6th Inning against Portland starter Luis Mendoza. 1B Eric Duncan slammed a three-run homer in the inning to cut the deficit to 6-3. It was Duncan's 4th homer of the year. Two more runs scored in the 7th Inning on a wild pitch by reliever Mike Bumatay and a filder's choice ground ball from CF Brett Gardner. The Thunder then tied the game at 6-6 in the 8th Inning on an RBI single by 3B J.T. Stotts.

The winning run scored in the 9th Inning after a two-out double by DH Randy Ruiz. Justin Christian came in as a pinch-runner and scored while stealing 3rd Base. The pitch from Beam bounced away from C Dusty Brown and allowed Christian to score from 2nd Base. J. B. Cox (4-2) worked 1 1/3 innings of relief for the win. Beam (2-3) was charged with the loss allowing one run in one inning. Justin Pope came on for a scoreless 9th Inning and his 17th save of the season.

The Thunder, now trailing Portland by six games in the Northern Division, send Jeff Karstens (4-0, 2.17) to the mound in the second game of the series on Saturday night. Frank Brooks (0-0, 1.08) starts for Portland. Game time is 6:00 PM.
