Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
The Binghamton Mets (35-44) defeated the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (36-42) 8-5 at NYSEG Stadium Friday night in front of 2,472.
The B-Mets got started early, scoring four runs in the first inning against New Hampshire starter David Purcey (2-1). Left fielder Rashad Eldridge, second baseman Wilson Batista and designated hitter Jorge Padilla had back-to-back-to-back singles to load the bases leading off the inning. First baseman Michel Abreu hit a grounder to shortstop Manny Mayorson, who made a fielding error, allowing Eldridge and Batista to score for a 2-0 lead. Right fielder Ambiorix Concepcion drove in Padilla on a ground out and center fielder Carlos Gomez followed with an RBI triple, scoring Abreu for a 4-0 advantage after one.
They made it 5-0 in the third as Abreu doubled and scored on an RBI base hit from Concepcion. The Fisher Cats got on the board in the top of the fourth as left fielder Adam Lind led off the inning with a solo homer off of Binghamton's Miguel Pinango. It was Lind's team-leading 14th homer of the year, making it 5-1.
The Mets answered in the bottom of the inning, knocking Purcey out of the game as he walked three in the inning and allowed two more runs to score, making it 7-1 Binghamton. Purcey left after four innings pitched having allowed seven runs (six earned) on eight hits and three walks while striking out four.
In the top of the fifth, Fisher Cats right fielder David Smith hit his league-leading 25th double, driving in two runs to make it 7-3. Righty Brian Wolfe came on for New Hampshire in the bottom of the fifth and walked Gomez, who then stole second and scored on an RBI single from catcher Andy Wilson. The run snapped a streak of 17.1 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run for Wolfe and made it 8-3.
New Hampshire scored again in the sixth on an RBI single by shortstop Manny Mayorson against Pinango, knocking him from the game. Pinango went five-plus innings, allowing four runs on eight hits and two walks with two strikeouts. The Fisher Cats climbed within 8-5 in the seventh as first baseman Chip Cannon hit a solo homer off of lefty Ryan Cullen. It was his seventh homer in the month of June, tops in the Eastern League.
Righty Matt Lindstrom finished off the Fisher Cats, retiring all four batters he faced to earn his fourth save.
The teams play again tomorrow night at 7:00 PM as lefty Ricky Romero (0-0, 0.00) makes his Double-A debut for the Fisher Cats against Binghamton's Mike Pelfrey (3-2, 2.88).
